This week at the Farmer’s Market
The Nacogdoches Farmers Market is open year round for the convenience of residents and visitors.
American Legion will have its trailer at the farmers market this Friday & Saturday, the 25th and 26th. They serve barbeque sandwiches, catfish plates, sausage on a stick and soft drinks. Proceeds to benefit US military veterans.
Things you might find this time of year: baked goods (breads, cakes, mini cheesecakes, cookies, fried pies & pies), candles, canned goods (jams & jellies, marmalades, preserves, chow-chow, pickled vegetables, salsas & relishes), artisan Texas cheese, organic chicken, free-range eggs, local raw honey, jewelry, plants (cacti, bedding plants, house plants, fruit trees, trees & whips), soaps (lye and herbal), sugar cane syrup, tamales, vinegars, fruit wines and wood products. LOCAL PRODUCE: frozen shelled beans (butter, baby Lima & pinto), beets, broccoli, Chinese cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cilantro, greens (arugula, Swiss chard, collards, kale, komatsuna, mustard, sorrel, spinach, tatsoi & turnip), herbs (3 types of basil, 3 type of mint, rosemary, sage & thyme), lettuce, green onions, parsley, frozen shelled peas (blackeyed, brown Crowder, Lady cream, purple hull & zipper cream), pecans (cracked, shelled & unshelled), squash (banana, butternut, pinata, spaghetti & winter) and turnips.

Improvised musical about Nacogdoches takes center stage at SFA
As part of its University Series “Expressions,” the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts will present “Broadway’s Next H!T Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.
The SFA College of Fine Arts will present “Broadway’s Next H!T Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.
“Those attending this performance will become part of the fun as suggestions from the audience are used to create an improvised musical from the stage about Nacogdoches,” Goodall said.
The New York Post described the show as having “a spontaneity, wit and inventiveness that must be seen to be believed.”
“Broadway’s Next H!T Musical” features improv superstars Rob Schiffman, Robert Z. Grant, Eric March, Jeff Scherer, Gregg Triggs and Rebecca Vigil as the cast in a musical created on the spot with Ralph Buckley, Deb Rabbai,, Schiffman and Triggs as co-producers.
“Broadway’s Next H!T Musical” is represented by Baylin Artists Management, Doylestown, Penn.
Before the performance, there will be a 7 p.m. informative talk presented by Jason Davids Scott, assistant professor of theatre, in Griffith Gallery, located across the hall from Turner Auditorium. The audience is invited back to the gallery for a post-performance reception to honor the event’s corporate sponsor, BancorpSouth.

SFA bands to present ‘Main Street USA’
The Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony of Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Main Street USA” in a combined concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.
The concert is a collection of pieces by American composers, many of whom are from rural areas, according to David W. Campo, SFA associate director of bands.
Under the direction of Tamey Anglley, SFA assistant director of bands, the Symphonic Band will open the concert with “The Belle of Chicago” by the famous American march composer John Philip Sousa.
“Sousa spent much time in Chicago from 1892 to 1893,” Anglley said, “so he composed this march ‘as a tribute to its ladies.’”
The Symphonic Band will also perform Aaron Copland’s “Down a Country Lane,” conducted by graduate student Jarred Taylor. Originally composed for piano, “Down a Country Lane” was commissioned by Life Magazine for young pianists to have access to quality music by a major composer, according to Anglley. Merlin Patterson completed the band arrangement in 1988.
The Symphonic Band will end its half of the program with “Third Suite” by American composer Robert Jager. The multi-movement work was composed in 1965 and is dedicated to Leo Imperial and his Granby High School Band of Norfolk, Va.
The Wind Symphony, under Campo’s direction, will begin its portion of the concert with H. Owen Reed’s classic “Missouri Shindig,” the composer’s impression of a Missouri hoedown, according to Campo.
“‘Missouri Shindig’ is based on the old square dance tune ‘Give the Fiddler a Dram,’” Campo said, “and like a Missouri hoedown, begins slowly and develops into a full-blown party.”
The Wind Symphony will perform William Grant Still’s “Fold Suite,” which “captures the simplicity of rural folk music and transports the listener to a simpler, more innocent time,” Campo said.
The Wind Symphony will also perform Reed’s “The Touch of the Earth” suite. “Michigan Morn” begins and ends the suite, which is itself an arrangement of seven pieces from Reed’s opera “Peter Homan’s Dream.” Closing the concert is Sousa’s “El Capitan,” a staple of the wind band’s repertoire, according to Campo.
The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or information, visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407.

Mayor Van Horn filing for re-election

Like many of you, I believe the best is yet to come for Nacogdoches. Our community faces challenges, but there are also many opportunities on the horizon. We have momentum on our side, thanks to the hard work of selfless public servants and dedicated elected officials, and by capitalizing on a consistent team effort, we can continue moving our city forward.
Serving as a member of that team has been humbling, educational and extremely rewarding, and it is my sincere desire to continue working with our community leaders to build on our successes. Today I’m asking for your continued support as I announce my intention to file for re-election as mayor of Nacogdoches.
It has been an honor to work with our city council, a spirited group of leaders who truly care about Nacogdoches. By building relationships, encouraging growth and seeking common-sense solutions that benefit the whole, we have been successful in improving the community and in identifying areas that need attention. There is more to be done, however, so today I’m asking for your help so that we can continue that work.
