Seeking gingerbread, gum drops and powdered sugar

The 16th Annual Nine Flags Christmas Festival is pleased to present the 6th annual Gingerbread Homes for the Holiday contest. Event organizers are currently seeking gingerbread houses to adorn beautifully decorated downtown Nacogdoches this holiday season.
Entries will be judged on overall appearance, neatness, creativity and best use of materials. Categories will include adult and children. First place in each category will receive a cash prize.
All of the delicious works of art will be on display at the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau, December 20-31.
“We are looking for the best gingerbread homes in Nacogdoches, so use your imagination and create a masterpiece of your very own,” said Lindsey Mathews, meeting & event coordinator for the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau, “Individuals, families, community groups and businesses are all invited to participate.”

Mother-Daughter Christmas Tea at Shelley’s Bakery Cafe

Little girls are invited to dress in their Christmas best and gather with their mothers for the inaugural Mother-Daughter Christmas Tea at Shelley’s Bakery Cafe. Grandmothers and aunts are also invited to attend.
The party will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, December 15 at Shelley’s Bakery Cafe, 112 N. Church St, and will be one of the highlights of the sixteenth annual Nine Flags Festival. It will feature tasty treats, toasty beverages, story reading and pictures with Santa. Each attendee will also receive a free souvenir ornament.
Seating at the Mother-Daughter Christmas Tea will be limited. Tickets are $25 for both children and adults and may be purchased at the Visitor Center, 200 E. Main St. The recommended age for the event is 4-10 years old. SFA School of Music to perform classic Christmas opera

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Gian Carlo Menotti’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, and at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

All ages will delight in this classic Christmas opera about a poor widow and her crippled son, Amahl, who give shelter to the Three Kings as they follow a mysterious star.

Nacogdoches middle school students Connor Parr, son of Dawn Parr and Chad Branton, and Wesley Gipson, son of Vatrina Voeks and Robert Gipson, will alternate in the title role of Amahl.

SFA student performers will include Waco senior Amanda Garcia and Houston junior Lindsay Lymer alternating in the role of the mother; Houston sophomore Joshua Chavira and Fort Worth freshman Johnny Brown alternating in the role of Kaspar; Houston junior Cairee Mayfield and Katy sophomore Ruben Perez alternating in the role of Melchior; Houston junior Brenton Mattox as Balthazzar; and Houston sophomore Toby Otorubio as Page. Dancers are Bianca Stein and Christian Semmler.

The 45-minute opera is performed in English.

Tickets for the Thursday night performance are $8 for adults and $6 for seniors, students and youth. Tickets for the Friday morning performance are $6 for individuals and $5 each for groups of 20 or more.
