The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present the Silver Keys Trio in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Cole Concert Hall as a feature of the 2013-2014 Cole Performing Arts Series.

The Silver Keys Trio features, from left, Christina Guenther, flute; Geneva Fung, piano; and Susan Nelson, bassoon. The trio will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
Working together at SFA from 2010-2012 led to a fast friendship and many musical collaborations among these musicians, and the trio has been performing together ever since, according to trio member Guenther.
“We are very excited to be sharing a program of eclectic works by American composers with audiences on our 2013 Texas/Louisiana tour,” she said.
The pieces to be performed are “Kalamus” by award-winning composer Dana Wilson, “Air for Bassoon and Piano” by Alec Wilder, “Trio for Flute, Bassoon and Piano” by Chick Corea, “All the Words to All the Songs” by Dan Welcher and “Retrofugue” by cellist and composer Jeremy Crosmer.
Guenther plays regularly with the Shreveport, La., Longview, Marshall and Texarkana, Ark., symphony orchestras. She has performed/presented at the festivals/conferences of the National Flute Association, the Florida Flute Association, the Mid-South Flute Society, the Society of Composers, Inc., the Classical Music Society, the Texas Music Educators Association, and at the Flute Society of Kentucky as winner of the Young Artist and Concerto Competitions.
A native of Hong Kong, Fung is an active soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in Hong Kong and the United States. In frequent demand as a collaborative pianist, she has performed in numerous vocal and instrumental recitals and master classes. At SFA, Fung serves as accompanist for choral union, opera productions, student recitals, competitions, auditions and master classes.
Nelson has performed with the annual Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria, as well as the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, Adrian Symphony Orchestra, and the Helena Symphony. She has received the top award at the Midwest Double Reed Society Young Artists Competition, was a finalist in the University of Oklahoma Concerto Competition, a finalist in the Arapahoe Philharmonic Concerto competition, and won third place in the Ann Arbor Society for the Musical Arts competition.
The Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

The Friends of Theatre, the community organization that supports the work of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre, has achieved its goal of endowing a scholarship for a theatre major with financial need. Now that the first annual Friends of Theatre Scholarship has been awarded, the organization will concentrate on developing larger local audiences for School of Theatre productions, Friends of Theatre President Rhonda Williams said.

SFA Senior Vanessa Hendricks receives the first annual Friends of Theatre Scholarship award from Friends President Rhonda Williams.
Senior theatre major Vanessa Hendricks of Emory was selected by the School of Theatre faculty to receive the first Friends of Theatre Scholarship. Hendricks, who is also the president of SFA’s chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, the national theatre honor society, is in the theatre teacher certification program and currently interning at Lufkin High School. She will direct the production of the full-length play “Wit” scheduled for Nov. 8 and 9 in the Downstage Theatre. She appeared in last year’s Mainstage Series production of “Stage Door,” among other shows.
“I couldn’t be more grateful to the Friends of Theatre,” Hendricks said. “I really appreciate how hard Rhonda and the rest of the group have worked to make this scholarship possible.”
“Additional contributions to build the endowment will always be welcome,” Williams said, “but now we’re ready to take on a new challenge.” The Friends of Theatre will spend the upcoming year raising funds to help promote School of Theatre productions, “and raising friends to go to the shows with us and help us spread the word about them,” she said.
“Everyone who goes to an SFA theatre production is impressed by the high quality of all aspects of the show, and especially the talent of the students onstage,” Williams said. “We’re asking friends of theatre, both new and longtime supporters, to commit to attending one of the first performances of a few of this year’s productions and then talking about the shows on social media, around the water cooler at work or over the back fence at home.”
To kick-start the audience development effort, Williams will host a free event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, at Union Café, 3205 N. University Dr. at the corner of E. Austin Street in Nacogdoches. Complimentary beverages and appetizers will accompany information about upcoming SFA theatre productions, how to get tickets and how to encourage others to attend the shows.
“It will be a fun and casual time to get together and organize the effort to strengthen this highlight of our local culture,” Williams said. Those planning to attend the event at Union Café are asked to RSVP to Liz Barkowsky in the School of Theatre office at (936) 468-4003 by noon Monday, Sept. 30.

Sheriff Bridges stated that this case would not have been possible without the interagency cooperation by all departments. The Nacogdoches Police Department, FBI, and Texas Rangers have really worked hard on this case over the years and gathered a lot of information that paid off in the end. We were able to take what new information we had obtained, with all the information they had gathered over the years and this case started coming together very quickly for us.
Sheriff Bridges stated that everyone on this case did a fantastic job of investigating it to the end and not quitting. This case is very significant and I think it should send a clear message to anyone thinking about committing such a violent crime like this, that our law enforcement agencies will work with one another to bring these people to justice.
