Barricaded suspect/arrest on Logan Circle

This morning at 6:25 am, the Nacogdoches Police Department responded to an open emergency line at a residence in the 3100 block of Logan Circle. 9-1-1 communications personnel could hear a disturbance in progress.

Arriving NPD patrol officers determined that several people were inside the residence. Five females, including two juveniles, exited the residence and informed officers that a man inside was armed with handgun.

Officers established verbal contact with the suspect and after negotiating with him for over an hour, he surrendered without further incident at 7:40 am.

Further investigation has determined that the suspect had forcibly entered the residence, physically assaulting two of the adults after making entry. The suspect also threatened the victims with the handgun. When officers arrived, the females were able to escape without injury. The suspect was a former boyfriend of one of the residents.

The man arrested has been identified as Marvin Tolliver, age 40 of Houston, Texas. He was taken to the Nacogdoches County Jail. He has been charged with burglary of a habitation and aggravated kidnapping.

Piano duo to feature works of esteemed composers

The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present Catharine Lysinger and Alex McDonald in a duo piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Sept. 20, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

Catharine Lysinger

Lysinger, who is senior lecturer in piano and pedagogy and piano at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of Art and artistic director of the piano preparatory department, and McDonald, who teaches piano at Texas Women’s University, will present “Twice the Impact: Music for Two Pianos.”

Alex McDonald

Among the pieces on the program are works by Johannes Brahams, Witold Lutoslawski, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Achille-Claude Debussy and Franz Liszt, according to Andrew Parr, professor of piano in the School of Music.

“Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56a is a perfect balance of the interplay of melodies between the pianos and the richness of resonance gained by adding the second instrument,” Parr said in describing what he called a “noble piece.”

Lutoslawski’s Variations on a Theme by Paganini uses a familiar violin theme made famous by Liszt’s variations for piano, Parr explained. The Lutoslawski piece is “written in an enjoyable and virtuosic 20th-century idiom,” he said.

Lysinger is a prizewinner in national and international piano competitions, including first prize in the Music Teacher National Association National Young Artist Competition and first prize in the Wideman International Piano Competition. She is an active soloist, chamber musician, and lecturer, and has performed as a soloist with the Filarmónica de Jalisco (Guadalajara, Mexico), the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, The Houston Civic Symphony and the Clear Lake Orchestra. Recently selected as Teacher of the Year by the Dallas Music Teachers Association, Lysinger was also nominated for the SMU Provost’s Teaching Excellence Award. Many of her students have been awarded first prize in prestigious competitions across North Texas.

McDonald has soloed with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de Mexico, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the Utah Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has performed across the United States as well as in Israel, Canada, South Korea, and Japan, where he has also organized relief concerts for displaced survivors from areas ravaged by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Additionally, he has been a featured performer on PBS, WRR, NPR, and WQXR. McDonald was the second prize winner of the 2007 New Orleans International Piano Competition and was the first Texas in more than 30 years to be accepted into the Van Cliburn Competition.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu

SFA School of Theatre radio play to air on KSAU

The School of Theatre at Stephen F. Austin State University has produced its second radio play, an innovative original work by playwright and SFA faculty member Jackie Rosenfeld, entitled “spam: in all lower-case letters.”

The half-hour program, directed by Zach Hanks, assistant professor of acting/directing, will air on campus radio station KSAU (FM 90.1) at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, with subsequent broadcasts at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29. It will also be available as a podcast at theatre.sfasu.edu from Sept. 26 through Dec. 14.

The production features characters voiced by a student cast. It was recorded in the School of Theatre’s recently renovated, state-of-the-art sound laboratory and features sound design and mixing by CC Conn, an SFA assistant professor who specializes in theatrical sound and lighting design. The original music is by School of Art graduate student Nancy Andrew.

Rosenfeld’s humorous script is drawn directly from the maddening and often absurd junk e-mail messages that clog in-boxes worldwide. The play centers on an exchange between a young woman and a “Nigerian barrister” promising romance and riches, and also includes surprising statistics and other background information about spam, as well as the texts of some of the most bizarre and ridiculous messages promulgated by producers of bulk e-mail, according to Scott Shattuck, director of the School of Theatre.

Stage plays by Rosenfeld can be seen this fall at Kingwood College in Houston and at The Secret Theatre in New York City. Hanks is a well known professional voice actor and director of voice actors who was until recently based in Los Angeles, Calif. He used the production opportunity to familiarize the students involved with microphone technique and other voice acting skills.
The barrister, Kube, is played by Pearland junior Nnamdi Nwankwo, and his correspondent, Kim, is portrayed by senior Valarie McLeckie of Longview. A computer voice named Factoid is played by Houston senior Sarah Wisterman. Sophomore James Bowling of Austin, juniors Sloan Frierson of Center Point and Ashe Vernon of The Woodlands, and senior Luke Norton of Sherman round out the cast. Senior John Lisi of Mesquite was the production coordinator.

“A large new audience responded enthusiastically to our first radio production in 2011-12, and I know they will enjoy this play just as much,” Shattuck said. “Including this medium in our production work provides an unusual range of learning opportunities for our students.

“The fact that they are working with professionals of the stature of Jackie Rosenfeld, Zach Hanks and CC Conn gives them an extraordinary chance to prepare for the exciting field of voice acting,” he added, “while providing a hilarious treat for the SFA and Nacogdoches communities.”

SFA turns 90

In the opening years of the 20th century, local citizens set about convincing the Texas Legislature to open a state college in Nacogdoches.

Toward that end, the group created an illustrated pamphlet titled “Twenty-Three Reasons Why Stephen F. Austin State Normal College Ought to be Located in Nacogdoches.” Among these revelations were that the city offered a delightfully mild climate, cheap electricity and a good sewage system, rare natural beauty, a progressive business spirit, ample entertainment facilities, a high moral tone, and three two-story hotels. The 23rd reason given was that Nacogdoches “links old Texas with the new.”

The townspeople prided themselves on the high value they placed on education, and their hard work and ingenuity paid off. In 1917, Nacogdoches was selected as the site of the newly chartered school, but progress was delayed by World War I. On Sept. 18, 1923, SFA welcomed its first students to class, and the rest, as they say, is history.

A Year of Celebration

The university’s 90th anniversary will be celebrated throughout the coming academic year, and planning is under way for a variety special events and activities, according to Jill Still, vice president for university advancement and chair of the 90th anniversary planning committee.

“Excitement for the anniversary has been building for months, and there will be many opportunities for students, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends of SFA to join in the celebrations surrounding this important milestone,” she said. “Our 90th anniversary year is an appropriate time to honor SFA’s proud traditions and extraordinary record of achievement while also looking ahead to new and exciting initiatives that will help ensure the continued success of our institution for many years to come.”

Cake and Ice Cream

A 90th-anniversary celebration is planned for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Plaza. The event will pay homage to a tradition that dates all the way back to SFA’s opening day. At the end of that first day of classes 90 years ago, the faculty, staff and students enjoyed cake in celebration of the 50th birthday of SFA’s first president, Dr. Alton W. Birdwell. Likewise, members of the SFA and Nacogdoches communities will gather to kick off the anniversary year in true Lumberjack style – with birthday cake and purple ice cream. Nacogdoches Mayor Roger Van Horn will be in attendance along with other special guests, including legislative representatives and the oldest and youngest members of the SFA Alumni Association.

Austin Building Lighting

Each night beginning Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Austin Building located on the corner of Vista and Alumni drives will be draped with a 90th-anniversary banner and illuminated with purple lights.

Fundraising Campaign

The SFA Office of Development is spearheading a special fundraising campaign throughout September, encouraging students, alumni, parents, friends, and faculty and staff members to make a donation to the university in honor of the 90th anniversary. Donations may be made in any amount – including suggested gifts of $9, $19.23, $90, $192.30, $900 or $1,923. Gifts may be directed to the donors’ area of choice: academics, athletics, scholarships or other. To make a 90th-anniversary gift online, visit sfasu.edu/give.

Coin Toss

The first-ever SFA coin toss will be held at the Stephen F. Austin statue in Sesquicentennial Plaza. The coin toss will last 19 hours and 23 minutes, in deference to the university’s first year of operation, and will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, and from 8 a.m. to 3:23 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 18.

SFA faculty and staff members, students, alumni, and friends will have the opportunity to donate coins to the SFA area or areas of their choice, including academics, athletics and scholarships. University representatives will be on hand to assist participants who wish to donate to a specific SFA college, department or scholarship fund.

History Preservation

The East Texas Research Center is encouraging alumni and others to donate SFA documents and memorabilia to help grow the University Archives in honor of the 90th anniversary. Greg Bailey, records manager and university archives librarian, says the ETRC welcomes donated SFA artifacts of all kinds, including photographs, journals, scrapbooks, school records, certificates and awards, correspondence – even old uniforms, letter jackets and the like.

“These and other unique items enrich our archives and play an important role in the documentation of the history of Stephen F. Austin State University,” he said. “They also serve as primary resources for student and faculty researchers, as well as the East Texas community as a whole.”

The ETRC also is collecting former students’ favorite memories of SFA through the ongoing Alumni Memory Project. The project’s goal is to collect, preserve and make available to the SFA community the history of student life at the university. Memories are added to the University Archives digital collection as they are received.

Donations of SFA memorabilia may be made in person at the ETRC, located on the second floor of Steen Library. For more information about contributing to the University Archives or the Alumni Memory Project, call (936) 468-4100 or visit library.sfasu.edu/etrc.

Also coinciding with SFA’s 90th anniversary, the ETRC staff has developed the SFA Timeline, a pictorial view of the expansion of the university through the nine decades of its existence. The SFA Timeline features photographs and brief biographies of the university presidents, histories of college buildings, and narratives of significant campus events. This is an ongoing project that will periodically receive updates. Take a step back in time to see how the university has evolved since 1923. Visit the SFA Timeline at library.sfasu.edu/etrc.

Community Service

In honor of the 90th anniversary, SFA students have pledged to complete 90,000 hours of community service during the 2013-14 academic year.

“The celebration of the 90th anniversary is an excellent time to highlight the impact our students make on our community, state, nation and world every year,” said Dr. Adam Peck, dean of student affairs. “I am excited about what can be accomplished when our students meet their goal of 90,000 hours of community service this year.”
