SFA’s Music Preparatory Division to present ‘Music Mind Games’ class

The Stephen F. Austin School of Music and the Music Preparatory Division will present “Music Mind Games,” an innovative music theory class for children taught July 14 through 18 in the Prep Performance Hall in the Music Prep House, located at 3028 Raguet St.

Suzuki violin teacher Brenda Josephsen will teach “Music Mind Games,” an innovative music theory class for children, July 14 through 18 at SFA’s Music Prep House.

Brenda Josephsen, Music Prep Suzuki violin teacher, will offer the classes from 3 to 4 p.m. for ages 4 to 6 years and from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for ages 7 to 11. Tuition is $100 per student.

“‘Music Mind Games” is an innovative teaching sequence of music theory that has a nurturing philosophy, friendly, colorful materials and a large variety of creative games,” said Pat Barnett, director of the Music Preparatory Division. “Students will learn to read music and develop skills necessary for understanding music theory and for becoming a well-rounded musician.”

In addition, students will learn to follow directions, be observant and pay attention to detail, and they will develop a quick and dependable memory, Barnett explained.

“They will develop skills to work together in a noncompetitive way and to not expect gifts or rewards for right answers,” she said. “‘Music Mind Games’ students will learn how to figure out answers again when necessary and develop respect for their teacher and fellow students.”
