With Halloween approaching this Friday, parents and children who plan to trick-or-treat should be careful and safety-conscious.
Sgt. Greg Sowell, NPD Public Information Officer, offers the following safety suggestions that can help keep Halloween safe and fun for all.
• Costumes should be flame retardant, and be decorated with reflective tape. If out after dark, a flashlight and cell phone should be carried.
• Costumes should fit well, to prevent tripping. Masks should fit properly and not obstruct visibility.
• Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be made of flexible plastic or other soft material.
• An adult should always accompany young children. Children should WALK, never run, from house to house. Use sidewalks where possible.
• Avoid crossing the street in the middle of the block, and walk facing oncoming traffic. Be careful going between parked cars.
• Trick or Treaters should only go to homes of people they know, and who have porch lights on.
• All treats should be inspected by an adult prior to consuming.
Motorists are urged to use extreme caution, especially in residential areas Friday evening.

All students in the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division who tried out for all-region orchestras recently were selected to participate in either the middle school or high school regional ensembles, according to Pat Barnett, Music Prep director.
“We are so very proud of our students,” Barnett said.
As a result, six middle school students and eight high school students will join the all-region orchestras when they perform Saturday, Dec. 6, at Longview High School.
Auditions were held Oct. 18 at Grace Community School in Tyler.
Chloe Cook was named concertmaster for the all-region middle school orchestra. Catherine Meisenheimer and Sheetal Bapu were both selected as first violinists. Mattie Chauvin was selected as principal for the second violins. Megan Petti and Ashlynn McBroom were also selected as second violinists.

The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present an exhibition of student photography showing Nov. 3 through Jan. 10 in the Reception Hall Gallery in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
The exhibition will include both traditional photographs and tintypes, according to Johanna Warwick, assistant professor of photography in the School of Art. The photographs are from a seven-day camping trip advanced photography students took during this past Maymester to Santa Fe, N.M.
“Every Maymester, we go camping for a week and return to school and make prints the following week,” Warwick said. “Previous trips have been to Big Bend. During the trip, we visit national parks, nearby cities and art museums and do a tintype workshop with Bostick & Sullivan (a supplier for handcrafted photography).”
All SFA art exhibitions are free and open to the public.
The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. For information on this and other SFA exhibitions, call (936) 468-1131.
