SFA’s Stone Fort Wind Quintet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The program will feature a mix of music and will include works by Giuseppe Cambini, Josef Foerster, Daniel Baldwin and György Ligeti. The quintet features School of Music faculty members Christina Guenther-Scott, flute; John W. Goodall, oboe; Christopher Ayer, clarinet; Staci Spring, bassoon; and Charles Gavin, horn.

The concert, which is part of the Cole Performing Arts Series, opens with a wind quintet standard of the Classical era – Cambini’s Quintet No. 2 in D Minor.
“There were many Classical composers such as Cambini, (Franz) Danzi and (Anton) Reicha who wrote for the wind quintet, a relatively new ensemble in their day,” said Ayer, who is professor of clarinet at SFA.

Quintet, op. 95 by Foerster, which is written in the late Romantic style, will follow. This quintet involves “some very thick writing for the quintet and challenges all instruments,” Ayer said. “In many places, the listener can detect the late Romantic influence of (Richard) Wagner and his contemporaries.”

The second half of the concert opens with Baldwin’s “Dreams of the White Tiger.” Baldwin is currently the director of bands and orchestra at Tabor College. This work is the result of a group commission by several wind quintets around the country, and this will be one of the first performances of the piece, Ayer said.

The concert’s closing piece, Ligeti’s “Six Bagatelles,” has become a standard work in the wind quintet repertory since its composition in 1953.

“Despite being written more than 60 years ago, the music is very fresh sounding and energetic,” Ayer said. “The six short, varied movements are rhythmically intense with strong melodic motives dominating the texture. Ligeti uses the instruments of the quintet masterfully in creating different colors to constantly present the repetitive motives in unique ways.”

Stephen F. Austin State University will host a free, action-packed Showcase Saturday on March 28 in Nacogdoches.

Prospective students will get to visit with university faculty and staff members, tour the campus and residence halls, and preview academic programs during the SFA Showcase Saturday event.

“There is no better time than Showcase Saturday to visit the beautiful SFA campus and enjoy the Lumberjack Experience,” said Ryan Horne, assistant director of the Office of Admissions.

“Guests are encouraged to visit one-on-one with our faculty to learn more about our quality, personalized academic programs, and our staff will be available to answer questions about everything from admission requirements to financial aid to residence life.”

SFA is a comprehensive, residential university located in the heart of Texas Forest Country in Nacogdoches. Approximately 13,000 students attend SFA, which is within a few hours’ drive of Texas’ major metropolitan areas.

Showcase Saturday event registration will begin at noon on the first floor of the Baker Pattillo Student Center and will remain open until 1 p.m. Each person who registers will receive an information packet. The opening program begins at 1 p.m. and will provide an overview of the day’s events.

Guests will then be able to visit with representatives of the academic departments until 4 p.m. at the Academic and Student Services Fair in the Student Recreation Center. Student service department representatives also will be on hand to provide information on campus life until 4:30 p.m. in the student center.

Campus and residence hall tours will begin at 1:45 p.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Campus tours will take students on a guided walk of the SFA campus, while the residence hall tour will showcase several halls on both the north and south ends of campus.

Admissions counselors will be available to discuss admission procedures and requirements in the Rusk Building, Room 206, from 1:45 to 5 p.m.

Financial aid information sessions will be held at 2:30, 3:15 and 4 p.m. in the Kennedy Auditorium, Room 101. Residence Life information sessions will be held at 2:30, 3:15 and 4 p.m. in the Baker Pattillo Student Center movie theater on the second floor.

Participating students will receive a free SFA T-shirt after turning in a completed evaluation form in the Grand Ballroom of the student center from 4 to 5 p.m.

All-Around Gold Medal winner in women’s gymnastics at the 1984 Olympic Games Mary Lou Retton will be the featured guest at the 2015 installment of the Archie McDonald Speaker Series at Stephen F. Austin State University, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 13, in the Grand Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the SFA campus.

In addition to becoming the first American woman to ever win a gold medal in gymnastics, Retton won silver medals for team and vault, and bronze medals for uneven bars and floor exercise. Her five medals were the most won by any athlete at the 1984 Olympics.

The speaker series event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 13, in the Grand Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the SFA campus.

“We are very pleased to have one of the most beloved American athletes of all time join us as our 2015 guest of the Archie McDonald Speaker Series,” said Dr. Richard Berry, SFA provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Mary Lou Retton epitomizes what amazing accomplishments are possible when positive attitude, hard work and dedication meet. She is a role model to many.”

Like previous guests of the series, Retton will be recognized at the event with the university’s Lifetime Cultural Achievement Award.

In addition to her success at the Olympics, Retton’s other athletic victories include being the only woman to win three American Cups (1983-85), the only American to win Japan’s prestigious Chunichi Cup (1983), two U.S. Gymnastics Federation American Classics (1983-84) and the All-Around title at both the 1984 National Championships and Olympic Trials. Retton retired from competitive gymnastics in 1986.

Today, Retton is in demand as a motivational speaker and corporate spokesperson and travels the world as a “Fitness Ambassador” promoting the benefits of proper nutrition and regular exercise.

She serves as national chairperson and sits on the Board of Governors of the Children’s Miracle Network. Retton was a commentator for NBC at the 1988 Olympic Games and wrote a daily column for USA Today at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics.

At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Retton served as an on-air reporter for Gannett Broadcasting’s NBC affiliates, the largest NBC affiliate group in the United States. Retton also co-hosted the weekly television series “Road to Olympic Gold.”

Retton is author of “Mary Lou Retton’s Gateways to Happiness: 7 Ways to a More Peaceful, More Accomplished, More Satisfying Life.” She has appeared in the motion pictures “Scrooged” and “Naked Gun 33 1/3” and has made appearances on television shows, including “Guiding Light,” “Knots Landing,” “Dream On” and “Baywatch.”

In 1994, the U.S. Olympic Committee established the annual Mary Lou Retton Award for athletic excellence. In 1995, first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton presented Retton with The Flo Hyman Award in recognition of Retton’s spirit, dignity and commitment to excellence. Retton was selected as a member of the official White House delegation representing the president at both the 1992 and 1998 Olympic Games.

The speaker series was created in 2010 by SFA’s College of Liberal and Applied Arts. Dr. Brian Murphy, dean of the college, designed the event to honor and preserve the legacy of Dr. Archie McDonald as a distinguished scholar, educator and community commentator. In the tradition of McDonald’s writings and oral presentations, a prominent national figure is hosted annually at SFA to discuss contemporary cultural issues.

McDonald taught history at SFA for 48 years and served as director of the East Texas Historical Association and editor of the association’s journal for 37 years. He was a past president of the Texas State Historical Association, past vice chair of the Texas Historical Commission and author/editor of more than 20 books on historical topics. Along with teaching, McDonald served as the university/community liaison for SFA, was a weekly commentator on Red River Radio in Shreveport, and wrote a weekly column for “The Daily Sentinel” in Nacogdoches and other newspapers. He passed away on Aug. 16, 2012.

McDonald participated in the first three events in the speaker series, interviewing former heavyweight champion boxer and iconic businessman George Foreman, Apollo 12 astronaut and professional artist Alan Bean, and 61st U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker III. McDonald’s widow, former Nacogdoches Mayor Judy McDonald, interviewed the series’ 2013 guest, former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. The series’ 2014 guest, Lyle Lovett, Grammy award-winning singer, composer and actor, was interviewed by Brad Maule, best known for his role as Dr. Tony Jones on “General Hospital” and a cinematography lecturer in SFA’s School of Theatre.
