Tolan’s ‘Stay Carl Stay’ to be performed in SFA’s Downstage Theatre

Playwright Peter Tolan’s “Stay Carl Stay” is featured among the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre’s spring student productions.

Directed by Brownsville senior theatre major Anna Goldberg, “Stay Carl Stay” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11, in the Downstage Theatre in the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus.

In “Stay Carl Stay,” an introverted young woman, dominated and taken for granted by her boyfriend, adopts a dog on the advice of an eccentric therapist, Goldberg explains. Pandemonium ensues when Carl, the dog, who is far better behaved than the boyfriend, learns to dance and talk and wins his mistress’ heart, according to the play’s description at barnesandnoble.com.

The cast includes Dallas junior Celeste Galey as Caroline; McAllen junior Pedro Dominguez as Carl; Palestine junior Greg Albright as Brian; Angelton junior Amber Holtz as Mary Sue; Amarillo senior Mary Collie as Dr. Weiss; and Wichita Falls freshman Travis Brasher as Bingo.

The production staff includes Lauren Wijangco, Sugarland freshman, stage manager; Kindle Bonner, Hudson junior, scenic designer; Cloey Hammonds, Nacogdoches freshman, costume designer; Andrea Nelson, Lake Dallas sophomore, lighting designer; Bruce Moran, Lake Jackson sophomore, sound designer; Bianca Stein, Brenham senior, hair and makeup designer; and Angel Williams, Beaumont sophomore, properties manager.

She is a member of the School of Theatre’s Peer Mentor Council and SFA’s Phi Beta cast of Alpha Psi Omega.

MEDIA INFORMATION-UPDATE-SHOOTING INCIDENT ON WARR CIRCLE

Contact: Sergeant Greg Sowell, PIO- 936.559.2618

UPDATE: SHOOTING INCIDENT 4700 BLOCK OF WARR CIRCLE- RELEASE # 3

The investigation continues into an overnight shooting incident that resulted in a female being shot by a male suspect and the suspect being shot by a police officer. Both of the injured remain in the hospital.

The NPD received a call of a disturbance with weapons at a residence in the 4700 block of Warr Circle at 9:52 PM. Upon arrival of the responding police officer, a male suspect and female victim were outside of the residence, with the male appearing to be forcing her into a vehicle.

As the officer was approaching vehicle, the officer heard a gunshot and saw the female victim fall to the ground. The suspect, armed with a .357 magnum handgun, then attempted to re-enter the residence. The officer fired twice at the suspect, striking him in the arm and lower body.

The victim has been identified as Letha Brewer, age 30 of Nacogdoches. She sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body.

The suspect has been identified as Vyron Rashad Johns, age 32 of Nacogdoches. He is currently in police custody in a local hospital, being treated for gunshot wounds to the arm and lower torso. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

As per standard policy, the police officer involved has been placed in administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation. The officer was not injured in the incident. The shooting investigation has been turned over to the Texas Rangers, and further information will be released by that agency. The NPD Professional Standards Unit is conducting an internal investigation to insure departmental policies and procedures were followed.
