Piney Woods Camerata to perform beloved music from Baroque period

The Piney Woods Camerata at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “La Follia,” a recital featuring some of the most beloved orchestral works from the Baroque period, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 3, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Among the composers to be included in the concert are Antonio Vivaldi, J. S. Bach, Henry Purcell and Francesco Geminiani, according to Dr. Evgeni Raychev, SFA cello instructor and director of the ensemble.

“It is difficult to pick a featured composition from the program as each one falls into the standard repertoire and is considered a masterpiece from that period,” Raychev said. “We are excited about this concert and are certainly looking forward to sharing our collaboration with our students with Nacogdoches’ loyal music patrons.”

The recital title, “La Follia,” comes from a famous work by Arcangelo Corelli that Geminiani transformed into a concerto grosso, according to Raychev.

The concert coincides with the annual celebration of National Music Week, May 3 through 10, sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Carthage Music Club.

The concert is a presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu.

‘August: Osage County’ opens Tuesday

SFA theatre and filmmaking lecturer, radio personality and TV/stage actor Brad Maule plays the role of Beverly Weston in “August: Osage County” to be presented by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, April 28 through May 2, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2. Tracy Letts’ rollicking tale focuses on what happens to the Weston family when their patriarch, Beverly, disappears and they hurriedly assemble at the rural Oklahoma home of his hilariously caustic, pill-popping wife, Violet, played by Rhonda Plymate Simmons. Their outrageous conflicts and lies collide to launch the corrosive comedy that won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and became the basis for the hit movie starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. All performances are in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $7.50 for students. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or visit theatre.sfasu.edu. The play is recommended for mature audiences.

SFA’s Children’s Performing Arts Series to present ‘The Lightning Thief’

“The Lightning Thief,” presented by Theatreworks USA, is the final show in the 2014-2015 season of the Children’s Performing Arts Series of the SFA College of Fine Arts. The show will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, in Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and the Children’s Performing Arts Series will conclude the 2014-2015 CPAS season with two performances of “The Lightning Thief” on Tuesday, May 12.

“‘The Lightning Thief’ is a funny, action-packed musical,” said Diane Peterson, manager of the SFA Fine Arts Box Office and director of the series. “This exciting national touring production is fast-paced and imaginative and targets students in second grade and up.”

Presented by Theatreworks USA and adapted from the book by Rick Riordan, “The Lightning Thief” is the story of Percy Jackson, who is about to be kicked out of boarding school … again. And that’s the least of his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy is the prime suspect.

Performances are at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in W.M. Turner Auditorium. Tickets are $6 for individuals and $5 per person for groups of 20 or more.

To order tickets, call 936.468.6407 or 888.240.ARTS. Visit the CPAS website at www.cpas.sfasu.edu for additional information.
