SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (July 8, 2026) – Officers with the Nacogdoches Police Department responded to a residence on July 7, 2026, at approximately 1:00 a.m. after receiving a report from an adult female who stated she had just been sexually assaulted and that the suspect had fled the scene.

The suspect was identified as Tristan Venegas, 30, of Nacogdoches, Texas, who had previously been identified as a person of interest in an earlier report involving the offense of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle. A short time after that investigation began, officers received the sexual assault report identifying Venegas as the suspect.

According to the preliminary investigation, the victim reported that she and Venegas met at a local bar before returning to her residence, where the sexual assault occurred.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.

Officers later located Venegas in the 100 block of South Street. Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, detectives developed probable cause to arrest Venegas for Sexual Assault, a Second-Degree Felony.

Venegas was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail.

OFFICERS ARREST SUSPECT IN CONNECTION WITH JULY 4 SHOOTING DEATH OF 12-YEAR-OLD

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (July 8, 2026): The Nacogdoches Police Department has arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting death of a 12-year-old child that occurred on July 4, 2026, at Eastwood Terrace.

On July 4, officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim at Eastwood Terrace. Dispatch advised responding officers that Redarion Davis a 12-year-old male had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Officers arrived on scene along with Nacogdoches EMS and found the juvenile suffering from a critical gunshot injury.

The victim was transported to a local medical facility before being airlifted to Texas Children’s Hospital, where he remained in critical condition. Despite lifesaving efforts, the child later succumbed to his injuries.

The University Police Department (UPD) and the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) assisted with securing the scene while investigators with the Nacogdoches Police Department Criminal Investigation Division (CID) processed evidence and conducted interviews.

During the investigation, Zamarion Douglas, 19, of Nacogdoches, Texas, was identified as the suspect. Douglas was arrested and charged with Injury to a Child, a First-Degree Felony. Detectives determined that Douglas discharged a firearm in the direction of the victim, causing the fatal injury.

The Nacogdoches Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

This remains an active investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

SFA appoints new principal, superintendent for SFA Charter School

Stephen F. Austin State University has appointed Dr. Dana Solomon as principal and superintendent of SFA Charter School. Solomon will begin her tenure during the summer.

“It is an honor to be named principal of SFA Charter School,” Solomon said. “I believe that every child can engineer a better future when provided a quality education, and I am looking forward to working with our whole SFA community to continue the stellar work of this legendary campus.”

Solomon arrives to this new role following four years as principal of Mike Moses Elementary School in the Nacogdoches Independent School District. Solomon also has served as a principal and assistant principal in the Frisco Independent School District for 12 years, and as a teacher for four years.

Solomon earned a Doctor of Education in educational leadership from the University of North Texas, a Master of Education Administration from Concordia University, and a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies from The University of Texas at Dallas.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Dana Solomon as the principal and superintendent of SFA Charter School,” said Dr. Stacy Hendricks, vice provost for academic affairs. “Her experience, collaborative leadership and dedication to education make her an excellent choice to lead the school into its next chapter while continuing to support high-quality instruction, meaningful student learning and strong partnerships with families and the community.”
