Shelley King will perform at The Liberty Bell in Nacogdoches on Friday, May 29 at 9:00pm. King is touring in support of her newest CD – “Building a Fire” which is receiving air play on many radio stations in Texas and around the US. The Austin, Texas based Americana songwriter and noted vocalist’s newest collection of songs frame her burnished alto voice and award winning song writing.
King’s blend of blues, folk, country, soul and rock led her to be the first woman appointed by the Texas Legislature to represent the state as it’s Official Musician, an honor she shares with Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Billy Joe Shaver and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. King has been an ambassador of the Austin, Texas sound for twenty years. She is a much praised singer and songwriter, who is both a successful solo artist and leader of a formidable band of Austin’s finest players. She has won Austin Music Awards for Song of the Year and Best Roots Rock Band, released seven albums to rave reviews and radio chart success and tours relentlessly performing concerts at venues and festivals all over the US. Her songs have been recorded by numerous national and international artists.
“Building a Fire”, her most recent CD and the second recorded with members of New Orleans favorite sons, the subdudes, has affirmed King’s place as master of her own style of Americana blues. The Austin Chronicle says “Building a Fire assembles an audio dictionary of roots music. King’s powerful, twanged alto takes care of the rest. The kickoff cut blends Louisiana zydeco with blues sensibility, the singer’s no-holds-barred vocal mastery front and center… “Building a Fire” is filled with sinewy soul and King’s trademark brand of torrid gospel and blues, it’s her most confident work yet. One where the songs, band, and singer sound comfortable together, each filled with the kind of grace that’s scarce and delivering salvation.”

Four faculty members from Stephen F. Austin State University’s Richard and Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing presented a free four-hour continuing education event to nurses, social workers and physicians across the state May 8 in Nacogdoches. SFA clinical instructors included, from left, Laura Logan, Regina Low, Veronica Sjolander and Carol Athey.
The event offered free continuing education to nurses, social workers and physicians across the state. SFA’s nursing faculty members presented on various topics, including utilizing art as Alzheimer’s therapy, concepts of the aging brain, health wellness and safety in the older adult, and cardiovascular health in the elderly.
Facilitated by SFA’s Texas AHEC East-Piney Woods Region, the presentation was delivered to an in-house audience of more than 45 health professionals from the area; broadcast to four other AHEC partnering sites in Waco, Lamar, Weatherford and Victoria; and made available online via webinar.
Texas AHEC East-Piney Woods Region has been a consortium partner with the East Texas Geriatric Education Center-Consortium for the past 10 years. The consortium provides geriatric-oriented medical education and clinical training for health professionals and students in health professions within a 72-county area of East Texas.
Through the years, consortium partners have delivered continuing education through teleconference presentations, workshops and conferences. The consortium also has worked with academic institutions and their health professions programs to distribute valuable geriatric education materials to be utilized in their various curriculums.
Although the current ETGEC-C grant program ends June 2015, a newly developed program will be created contingent upon an award through the United States Department of Health Resources and Services Administration. The new program, if funded, will combine a new partnership between two premier medical schools in Texas – the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, along with regional centers of Texas AHEC East.
