Contact: Kelly Daniel 936-560-5533 Membership & Marketing Manager

Focus on Texas Way healthcare coverage at chamber meeting

Attend the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce Fourth Friday Luncheon presented by Urgent Doc – Urgent Care Clinic, noon to 1 p.m., Friday, June 26 at Austin Hall, 4603 North St.

Speakers Kinnie Douglas Reina, MPH, CHES, Director of Community Health at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, and Clay Farell, FACHE, Chief Operating Officer at Nacogdoches Medical Center, will present “Nacogdoches Healthcare Update: Exploring Alternatives for Healthcare Coverage” at the meeting.

“Texas is opposed to taking federal funds for Medicaid expansion to the uninsured,” Farell said. “But momentum may be shifting towards a bi-partisan ‘Texas Way’ that everyone can support.”

The information to be presented is vital for all local businesses.

“Those who attend this luncheon will become familiar with the issues that the underinsured population faces, the current healthcare environment and future plans for improved access to care,” Douglas Reina said.

As Director for the Community Health Education Department at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital, Douglas Reina’s duties include conducting health education events and addressing community health needs in Nacogdoches County. She currently serves on several local collaborative groups including the Nacogdoches Advisory Board for the Rural East Texas Health Network; and facilitates strategic planning with the Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition. She received her Bachelor degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and has a Master of Public Health from University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth and is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). Her prior public health experience includes working with the Piney Woods Area Health Education Center and the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Farell joined Nacogdoches Medical Center in March 2010 as Director of Business Development. In June 2013 he was appointed as C.O.O. Prior to moving to Nacogdoches, Farell worked at the Tenet home office in corporate business development. He previously served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Farell received an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin and a BS from the United States Air Force Academy, and he is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.

The luncheon serves as the Chamber’s monthly membership meeting. Attend and stay on top of what is going on at the Chamber and around town. Lunch is $16 and reservations are required by noon, Wednesday, June 24. Find the secure “pay online and register” option in Hot News at www.nacogdoches.org or call 936-560-5533.

Event Gold sponsors are Accolade Hospice and Advantage Plus Healthcare.

Bring a business card for a chance to win $50 sponsored by Commercial Bank of Texas and all Chamber members are entered in a $250 drawing sponsored by Axley & Rode, LLP.

Registration deadline nears for Kindermusik Adventure Camps

The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and the Music Preparatory Division will once again offer the popular Kindermusik Adventure Camps this July for children age newborn through 7 years.

The camp classes, which run July 13 through 17, will be held in the Prep Performance Hall of the Music Prep House, located at 3028 Raguet St. Each class has a different theme and is age appropriate, according to Pat Barnett, director of the Music Preparatory Division of the SFA School of Music.

“In just five lessons, children can experience a summer’s worth of music, stories and activities created to inspire a lifetime of learning,” Barnett said. “In a Kindermusik summer camp, parents and children will play, learn, sing, dance, create and share in the fun of making music together.”

“Oh, What Busy Days!” is for newborns to 18 months. With a little more Tchaikovsky in a “Twinkle, Twinkle” repertoire, parents will discover new ways their child can benefit from the classics. Parents will also develop a new appreciation for the world’s most respected music. Each lesson features new activities and songs that the parent can sing for all the places baby and mom go together – the store, the playground, the doctor and more. The class is from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Tuition is $95.

“Zoo Train” is for children 18 months to 3 years. Toddlers can tag along this summer with a traveling zoo train and bring their own stuffed animals for the petting zoo. Children can wear long white socks on their hands for polar bear paws and learn about real animals in the zoo. The class is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuition is $120.

“On the Road” is for children 4 to 5 years and will help parents relive their own childhood memories. Kids will play “Eye Spy” and find shapes in the clouds to pass the time and take imaginary trips in a bus named “Van Go” to fun-filled vacation destinations such as the carnival, a summer cottage and the beach. The class is from 1 to 2 p.m., and tuition is $130.

“Tell Me A Tale” is for children 6 to 7 years. Through storytelling, children develop an early awareness of rhythm, movement, singing and drama. Each lesson features a new tale from around the world, explored through multi-instrument and multi-cultural elements. It is an around-the-imagination adventure of the greatest stories from Europe, Malaysia, South Africa and more, according to Barnett. The class is from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuition is $140.

“Inspire children’s love of learning in our delightfully engaging summer sessions,” Barnett said. “Best of all, every one of our summer camp activities – the music, stories and crafts – is specially designed to nurture every child’s natural curiosity, eventually drawing each child toward learning new words, new concepts and big ideas.”

Home materials are included with each class. Deadline to register in June 30.

Register by calling the Music Prep Office at (936) 468-1291 or by downloading a registration form from the website: www.music.sfasu.edu/prep. For additional information, email musicprep@sfasu.edu.

Cutline: Karen Greer, a certified Kindermusik teacher for the SFA Music Preparatory Division, leads young students Sean Ollan Crager, Jackson Collier and Isaac Collier in a lesson at the Music Prep House.
