SFA's A Cappella Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
The performance will be the choir’s first concert at SFA after returning from a successful tour of Italy last May. The program will feature a wide variety of music from the 17th century to the 21st century, according to Tim King, director of choral activities for the SFA School of Music.
Among the works to be performed is “Singet dem Herrn” (Sing to the Lord) by J.S. Bach.
“Out of all the music – choral, keyboard, and orchestral music – that Bach composed, which is in excess of 1,110 works, he only composed six motets or anthems,” King said. “‘ Singet dem Herrn’ is the most famous of the six and exhibits Bach’s mastery of composition and his devotion to music of the church.”
The choir will also perform a set of two pieces by present day composers based on the subject of rain. “Aizej, Lietiņ” (Go Away Rain) by Ēriks Ešenvalds is based on Latvian folksong. The performance will feature Haley Brant, Katy junior, and Kjersten Sanders, Sugar Land junior, on harp with SFA music faculty member Christina Guenther on wooden flute. “Cloudburst” by American Eric Whitacre will be performed complete with storm sound effects, King said.
The concert is a joint presentation of the College of Fine Arts and School of Music.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu.
The Texas 12th Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments concerning three cases beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in the McGee Building Room 133 on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. The event will provide an opportunity for educators, students and state residents to witness a judicial process not often observed.
This will be the second time the court has heard cases on the SFA campus. Sponsored by SFA’s College of Liberal and Applied Arts, the event is free and open to the public. The session is expected to last until noon, however, individuals may come and go in a non-distracting manner.
The Texas 12th Court of Appeals is based in Tyler and covers 17 counties in East Texas, including Nacogdoches County. The court is responsible for hearing the initial appeals in civil and criminal matters.
As an appellate court, the members of the 12th Court of Appeals (three justices) review decisions by lower courts and determine if there was procedural error in the trial. The court does not try cases, hear witnesses or have jurors. The justices will review the cases and consider the attorneys’ arguments from both sides of each case.
There will be a security check prior to admission to the court, and attendees are forbidden to use cellphones or recording devices.
For information about the event, contact Dixie Groll at grollda@sfasu.edu or at (936) 468-2385.

Nacogdoches Police Officers are continuing to investigate a felony hit and run accident in the 3300 block of NE Stallings late Saturday night.
At approximately 10:13 pm, NPD dispatch received a call about a teenage pedestrian accident victim lying in the roadway on NE Stallings Dr across from Nacogdoches High School. The teenage pedestrian victim was coming or going from the Nacogdoches Homecoming dance at the high school at the time of the accident.
NPD investigators have reason to believe the suspect vehicle might be white in color, possibly a Honda or Acura, which will likely have moderate front end damage.
NPD is asking the public for help. Employers who change shifts at approximately 10 pm are asked to notify NPD if there are any vehicles possibly related to this incident on their property. Body shops, auto repair shops and insurance agencies are also asked to be on extra alert for this type of vehicle coming to their attention for repairs or insurance claims.
“A young teenage man is still in the hospital in critical condition, and we are desperately trying to determine what happened Saturday night and who was involved in the accident and why they didn’t stop,” said Lt. Dan Taravella.
Nacogdoches Police are asking anyone with information about the accident to notify the NPD Traffic Division at 936-559-2639 or Nacogdoches Crime Stoppers at 560-INFO(4636).
