AGGRAVATED ROBBERY-CHICKEN EXPRESS-1614 NORTH UNIVERSITY DRIVE

Issued 06-29-2016 8:05 am CDT
Contact: Sergeant Greg Sowell, PIO- 936.559.2618

At approximately 11:54 p.m. last night, two suspects robbed the Chicken Express on North University Drive at gunpoint. The suspects entered the store and one displayed a handgun. One of the suspects also assaulted an employee. The employee sustained non-life threatening injuries that did not require immediate medical treatment.

The suspects took an undetermined amount of cash and fled the store on foot, in an easterly direction behind the building. A witness reported seeing two persons, possibly the suspects, enter a wooded area near the store. A perimeter was established in an area between Cardinal Street and East Starr Avenue and the Nacogdoches SWAT team was notified. They conducted a coordinated ground search of this area. This area is heavily wooded with very thick vegetation. This search, using officers and night vision equipment, took almost four hours to complete. No suspects were located in the search, which ended at approximately 4:30 this morning. Participating in the search were NPD officers and officers with the SFASU Police and Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Department. The Nacogdoches Fire Department and County EMS also responded and stood by.

The suspects are still at large and are described as two black males, both with slender build. Any person with information regarding this case should call Nacogdoches Crime Stoppers at 560-INFO (560-4636) or NPD at 559-2607.

SFA students, staff members become Texas Friendly certified

Stephen F. Austin State University students and staff members within the School of Human Sciences recently completed Texas Friendly Hospitality Training to hone their customer-service skills and receive their Texas Friendly certification.

Dr. Chay Runnels, associate professor and hospitality administration program coordinator at SFA, has been a Texas Friendly instructor for 16 years and recently conducted a training session on campus.

“This certification is recognized throughout the state,” Runnels said. “It gives participants a competitive edge against others. Also, potential employers recognize the training and know participants have been through valuable customer-service training.”

During the training, students and staff members attended workshops where they watched videos, discussed real-life situations and role-played scenarios.

Sara Ross, SFA junior food, nutrition and dietetics major from Minneapolis, was a participant and said she enjoyed watching videos about Southwest Airlines and Pike Place Market, as well as examining her strengths and weaknesses regarding personal hospitality skills.

“Taking inventory of one’s skills and personality can be a daunting task, but it is a necessary facet for personal development,” Ross said.

The training was organized around the CIVIL framework, which focuses on culture, internal customers, value, ideal commitments and listening. Runnels said this helps trainees learn the importance of their roles as frontline employees.

Ross, who also is a student worker for SFA’s School of Human Sciences and a research assistant for SFA’s James I. Perkins College of Education, gained lessons she hopes to use in her career.

“The training gave me perspective on how successful companies can operate by recognizing the individuals within,” Ross said. “It also made me recognize that having fun at work while encouraging others to do the same is key to success. If you are friendly to coworkers and incorporate humor into the day, this attitude will certainly radiate to the customers.”

Tatnall’s work featured in upcoming 12X12 art scholarship fundraiser

Artwork by Runcie Tatnall will be among the pieces included in the annual 12X12 scholarship fundraiser of the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts. Silent bidding started June 29, and the party and sale begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 16, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

Treasured works of art created by Runcie Tatnall will be among the pieces featured in this year’s 12X12 scholarship fundraiser of the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University.

A former assistant professor of drawing and painting in the SFA School of Art, Tatnall recently left SFA to pursue other career interests, but he continues to support the Friends of the Visual Arts and the organization’s efforts to provide scholarship opportunities for deserving young artists.

The silent auction features 12-by-12-inch pieces created by approximately 70 artists from Nacogdoches, Lufkin and other areas of East Texas. The art is on display beginning June 29 in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches. Anyone may silently bid on the pieces. Bidding will continue until Saturday evening, July 16.

At 6 p.m. that evening, pieces that have no silent auction bids (minimum $250) are available to purchase for $100. Unsold art will be awarded as raffle items, with tickets available at the event. Texas State Rep. Travis Clardy is scheduled to be the evening’s MC and will announce the winners of the art pieces. The public is encouraged to attend this free event.

Among this year’s sponsors are The Daily Sentinel, Vida Raney and Liquor Mart.

A 12X12 participant for six years, Tatnall will have three pieces in this year’s fundraiser. Currently living back in the Newark, Delaware, area where he grew up, Tatnall began painting and drawing at an early age. Portrait and figure paintings (including dogs) have long been the dominant subject matter in Tatnall’s work. His body of 26 large boxing paintings was completed in 2009.

“I use layers of paint vigorously applied with minimal manipulation to convey the immediacy of life,” he said in describing his work. “Taking deliberate risks with illusionistic representation, I incorporate impulsive paint application, ‘unfinished’ areas, and distortion of the figure.

“The characters that inhabit my paintings I view as performers,” he continued. “I am interested in creating pictures that invite the viewer by engaging them in the enjoyment of the performance and the narrative.”

After receiving a degree in illustration from the University of Delaware in 1995, Tatnall lived in Washington, D.C. working as an exhibiting artist, portrait painter and caricature artist. In 1999, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he continued to work as an exhibiting artist, as well as a muralist and teacher. Tatnall received an M.F.A. degree in painting from the University of Miami in 2009. He has been exhibiting nationally since 1995 in Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C and Houston. His portraits, landscapes and still life paintings are part of collections throughout the United States.

While exhibiting large figurative paintings for many years, Tatnall works simultaneously on smaller, non-representational pictures that allow him to “experiment with materials and technique to achieve a greater freedom and spontaneity,” he said.

Within the past year, the FVA awarded more than $16,000 in Friendship Grants and scholarships to 46 students; the grants ranged from $200 to $400 per student, while the scholarships ranged from $750 to $1,000. The grants were awarded to help defray the costs of special projects for their art classes or M.B.A./B.A. exhibition. Some recipients have attended conferences or gone on school trips that will help with their professional development. This has included Maymester trips for art students to go to Big Bend for a special photography project. This summer, the organization also awarded scholarships for several elementary school students to attend the SFA Art Academy.

The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. For more information about 12X12, call The Cole Art Center at (936) 468-6557.

SFA graduate student to serve as section editor for psychology journal

Stephen F. Austin State University graduate student Ashley Doss has been selected to serve as the graduate student section editor for Research and Practice in the Schools: Official Journal of the Texas Association of School Psychologists. Doss is working toward her master’s and doctoral degrees in school psychology at SFA.

Stephen F. Austin State University graduate student Ashley Doss, an Imperial Valley, California, native who is working toward her master’s and doctoral degrees in school psychology at SFA, has been selected to serve as the graduate student section editor for Research and Practice in the Schools: Official Journal of the Texas Association of School Psychologists.

During her two years as graduate student section editor, Doss will be responsible for recruiting graduate students to serve on the Graduate Student Editorial Board, coordinating the peer-review process of submitted manuscripts, communicating feedback and editorial decisions to authors, and working with editors to maintain the journal’s standards, as well as provide input on potential journal issues and topics.

“This opportunity means I’m beginning to take root in my career,” Doss said. “I believe your career starts the second you begin higher education, and this is a great opportunity to take root, create connections and establish a network.”

Doss added her editorial appointment creates a pattern of publication in the school psychology field—incorporating the dual role of practice and publishing, which she says is extremely important in bridging the gap between field work and research.
