Members of the Student Association of Nutrition and Dietetics at Stephen F. Austin State University have created a cookbook, “The Lumberjack’s Guide to Whole Food Cooking,” and are offering it for sale to help benefit a local food bank.

SAND is an SFA student organization comprising about 30 members who are aspiring food, nutrition and dietetics professionals devoted to changing people’s health through eating wholesome, unprocessed meals.

Through this cookbook, the students hope to reintroduce people to the benefits of healthy cooking and to know what is in their food in addition to supplying funds to assist Nacogdoches HOPE (Helping Other People Eat), a food bank providing supplemental food to Nacogdoches County residents that helps feed more than 1,500 people each month.

SAND members collaborated with family, SFA faculty members and friends to develop the cookbook by asking them to submit recipes.

From appetizers, entrées, side dishes, breads and rolls to soups, salads and desserts, the cookbook is full of recipes promoting cooking with recognizable wholesome foods that are easy to prepare and delicious. The book also includes gluten-free, paleo and vegetarian recipes.

Lexi Perimon, SAND president from Mount Vernon, Illinois, had the idea to create the cookbook after visiting her mother during the summer.

“The cookbook is a great way to encourage our members’ involvement and for us to become more involved with the community,” Perimon said. “It’s also a way to make a donation to a local nonprofit.”

SFA students printed 200 books and a percentage of the sales will be donated to Nacogdoches HOPE.

Students have been selling the cookbooks since October. The group will take them to the Nacogdoches Farmers Market Saturday, Dec. 10 and 17, where they can be purchased for $15. The cookbooks also can be shipped for an additional $3. They also may be ordered by emailing sfasand@gmail.com.

“What Nacogdoches HOPE does is really important. It’s a way to help families that are going through tough times feed themselves,” Perimon said. “SFA is such a big part of Nacogdoches, and it’s good to show we care and that we are not just here for college. We want to help the community.”

POLICE ISSUE HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

CONTACT: Sgt. Greg Sowell
Police Department P.I.O.
936.559.2607

During the holiday season, people are often busy, excited, and sometimes a bit careless. The Nacogdoches Police Department issues the following suggestions to help keep your holiday season safe and happy.

At Home:

⦁ Be sure and lock all windows and doors when you leave your house or apartment.
⦁ Don’t display holiday gifts where they can be seen from a window or doorway. Store gifts before going away on holiday trips.
⦁ If you go out for the evening, turn on a light or radio so your home appears to be occupied.
⦁ If you take a holiday trip, have some interior lights activated by an automatic timer. Have a neighbor or friend check on your home, keep the yard, and pick-up mail and newspaper deliveries.
⦁ Be wary of strangers soliciting for charitable donations. They may attempt to take advantage of people’s generosity during the holidays. Ask for identification, how donated funds are used, if contributions are tax deductible, etc.

-MORE-

⦁ Be careful when posting on social media about being absent from your home. Never post specific vacation plans or departure and arrival times and dates.
⦁ Immediately after the holidays, mark new gifts with your driver license number and record new serial numbers.

⦁ Test your smoke detectors.

⦁ Use only fire-resistant ornaments on your tree and make sure that electric lights are functioning properly. Don’t leave the lights on overnight or when you are away from home.
⦁ Avoid leaving boxes from purchases (TV, VCR, computer, etc) out on the curb for trash pickup. Break these boxes down, and place inside a trash bag.

While Shopping:

⦁ Shop before dark if possible. Coordinate shopping trips with a friend. Never park in an unlit lot or area, no matter how convenient it is.
⦁ Lock your packages and gifts in your vehicle’s trunk. Keep your vehicle’s doors locked and windows closed.
⦁ Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check, credit card, or debit card when possible.
⦁ To discourage purse-snatchers, don’t overburden yourself with packages. Have your car keys out and ready before leaving the store.
⦁ Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse under your arm. Keep your wallet in an inside jacket pocket, not in a rear trouser pocket.
⦁ Teach children to go to a store clerk or security guard and ask for help if you become separated. They should never go into a parking lot alone.

-MORE-

Holiday Party Safety:

⦁ Have non-alcoholic beverages available for party guests.
⦁ Serve something to eat before serving alcoholic beverages. High protein foods stay in the stomach longer and slow the absorption of alcohol into the system.
⦁ Have alternative transportation for intoxicated persons. Never allow guests to drink and drive.

The NPD asks that persons report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 559-2607.
