The City of Nacogdoches Main Street program is excited to announce that tickets for the fifth annual Wine Swirl are on sale now!

Proceeds will be used to enhance the beautification and promotion efforts of historic downtown Nacogdoches. The ticketed wine and food pairing event will showcase Texas wineries and local and regional food trucks along the historic brick streets.

Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy wine samples from at least 15 Texas wineries and purchase delicious fare from several local and regional food trucks.

The event will also give attendees the opportunity to interact with local artisans, enjoy live music, be entertained by various street performers, and sample the wonderful hospitality from our local Downtown merchants!

For our overnight guests, an accommodation package has been created. Whether in-town or out-of-town, we hope you will join us at our host hotel, the Comfort Suites for the entire weekend. This is your one-stop-shop for Wine Swirl tickets, event t-shirts, and special room rates.

Changes for 2017:

We will host local and regional food trucks on Main Street. A variety of food will be available for purchase, to add a unique and fun spin on this longstanding Downtown Event. Free samples will be limited (if any) in stores.

We are looking forward to announcing new wineries later this week to join our awesome event!

Purchase your tickets here http://2017swirl.brownpapertickets.com/ or at the CVB in Downtown Nacogdoches before they’re all gone!

This event sold out in 2 weeks last year so time is of the essence! Cheers!!!

Pre-registration now open for SFA’s third annual diversity conference

Topics ranging from discrimination in professional environments to poverty and race within the education system to the modern-day contextualization of Jesus will be discussed during the third annual Diversity Conference, to be held Saturday, Jan. 28, on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Organized and hosted by SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, the conference gathers East Texas professionals, SFA students and faculty members, and the Nacogdoches community to join conversations about various diversity-related issues.

“The overall purpose of the conference is to educate the SFA and Nacogdoches communities on all aspects of diversity, multiculturalism and social justice,” said Veronica Weaver, OMA director. “In addition, the Diversity Conference seeks to provide a platform for presenters to share their diversity-related work with conference attendees and engage in vital multicultural dialogue.”

More than 150 individuals attended the conference last year, Weaver said, and organizers hope to double that number. This year’s theme is Facing Diversity.

“This theme was chosen by our OMA caucus members because diversity is, at times, something that people do not want to discuss for the risk of being uncomfortable,” Weaver said. “During this conference, we want to not only discuss diversity but embrace it. Diversity includes many things such as ethnicity, gender, religion, ability and so much more. During this conference, all these topics and more will be discussed.”

Dr. Kwame Antwi-Boasiako, chair of SFA’s Department of Government and a professor of political science and public administration, will serve as the conference’s guest speaker at 9 a.m. The event will consist of four blocks with a total of 16 panels. Topics range from mental health, race, sexual orientation, diversity and education, art, religion and more.

New to this year’s conference is the addition of a lunchtime activity aimed at allowing participants to interact with each other. Organizers also are encouraging artists to submit pieces to the Diversity Museum, which will be held concurrently with the conference.

The conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public. Day-of registration will open at 8 a.m. Pre-register by Friday, Jan. 20, to receive lunch. To register, visit sfasu.edu/oma.

For information, contact the OMA at (936) 468-1073 or email oma@sfasu.edu.

Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. Dr. Jason A. Smith is associate professor of forest pathology, the co-founder of the Emerging Threats to Forests Research Team and State Forest Health Extension specialist at the University of Florida. The focus of his research program is to provide a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and biology of interactions between tree hosts, pathogens, their vectors and the environment in order to reduce the impact of disease on trees.

Smith’s research has recently focused on laurel wilt of redbay and avocado, new oak diseases and re-emerging pine diseases in the Southeastern United States.

In addition to serving as the principal investigator of the Forest Pathology Laboratory, Smith teaches graduate and undergraduate courses and carries out forest health extension activities, including advanced tree diagnostic services. Professionally, he is active in the American Phytopathological Society and American Conifer Society and serves as associate editor of the journal Forest Pathology.
