Structural steel beams are being placed this month as construction continues on the Ed and Gwen Cole STEM Building on the SFA campus. Officials said all projects are on schedule, and the building should be completed by fall 2018.
“The project began with the demolition of Todd and Gibbs Halls. The site then had selective tree clearing and grading to prepare for foundation construction,” said Ron Watson, associate director of SFA’s physical plant department. “First-floor concrete placement and the related under-slab plumbing and electrical rough-in continue.”
In response to a national call for reform in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, SFA began years ago to implement activities, courses and public outreach initiatives that would enrich STEM-related interests. That same push for STEM reform was later incorporated into the SFA 2020 campus master plan.
Enrollment for STEM-related degrees increased at SFA following the push, creating the need for more classroom and equipment space. In 2015, the 84th Texas Legislature granted SFA approximately $46.4 million in tuition revenue bonds helping fund construction of the building.
As part of the university’s 2020 master plan, the SFA Board of Regents approved the demolition of Gibbs Hall, Todd Hall and University Woods in preparation for construction of the new building and relocation of the Residence Life Operations headquarters.
“We are still using the plan outlined during the building-programming phase,” said Dr. Dan Bruton, associate dean of SFA’s College of Sciences and Mathematics. “The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy will be moving into the building, but there will be multipurpose spaces that will be used by other departments as well.”
Officials in the College of Sciences and Mathematics said they have already experienced a spike in interest from potential students.
“I’ve also had a student tell me that he is coming to SFA specifically because of the STEM building,” Bruton said. “Students are most excited to utilize makerspaces, the maker lab, the digital media lab, huddle spaces and the planetarium.”
The construction area was recently extended temporarily to install hot and chilled water lines. A small portion of sidewalk between the McGee Business Building and Norton H.P.E. Complex will remain closed to pedestrian traffic for approximately six weeks.

International Yoga Day at the Public Library
The Nacogdoches Public Library invites the community to attend a celebration of International Yoga Day on Wednesday, June 21st at 5:30 p.m. The one-hour class will introduce and guide you through a series of beginner-accessible Hatha yoga postures and breathing exercises. Shannon Madden will facilitate this free class that’s open to the public.

PowerPoint & Prezi Class at the Public Library
The Nacogdoches Public Library is offering a free PowerPoint & Prezi class on Friday, June 23rd at 5:30 pm. Students will learn how to create a slideshow for school, work or fun. Students will also receive an introduction to Prezi, an online slideshow presentation site. The class is free, but registration is requested. Meditation Basics at the Public Library
The Nacogdoches Public Library invites the community to attend a workshop on Meditation Basics facilitated by Arrie Tucker on Saturday, June 24th at 1:30 p.m. This class will be a basic introduction to the practice of meditation. The benefits of a regular meditation practice have been touted for thousands of years, with recent research showing the quantifiable physical health benefits. No experience is necessary.

Dogs at Work at the Public Library
Family and children’s programs continue with a fun exploration of working dogs on Tuesday, June 27th at 10:00 a.m. Participants will learn about working dogs and how even dogs can help build a better world. A K-9 dog and his handler and will examine how dogs help the police do their jobs. We’ll also meet some therapy dogs and learn about the numerous ways these dogs help our community. Cupcake Workshops at the Public Library
The Nacogdoches Public Library will host cupcake decorating workshops, one for teens and one for adults. The teen event, Build a Better Cupcake, will be held on Friday, June 30th at 5:30 p.m. The adult event, Cupcake Construction, will be on Friday, July 7th at 5:30 p.m. Participants will learn techniques for frosting and decorating the most inviting and exciting baked treats. “Our summer theme is Build a Better World, and the first step to a better community may just be through baked goods!” says Crystal Hicks, assistant library director. “We had planned a decorating event for tweens and teens, but when our adult patrons learned of it, they requested their own event. We always ask for feedback and aim to please.”

Reading Buddies at the Public Library
Although the new school year seems far away, the Nacogdoches Public Library reminds parents and caregivers how critical it is for children to continue to read during the summer. For children who might need a little assistance with their reading aloud skills, the public library offers Reading Buddies every Wednesday from 4:00-5:00 pm. Library staff or volunteers work with children and their parents or caregivers to assist with reading fluency and comprehension. The program is free and no registration is required. Children entering grades 1st through 12th are eligible.

Techcycle Saturday is a free technology recycling event. One more event will be conducted this year, from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 23 at 220 W. Hospital Street.
Several members of the East Texas Board of Realtors will volunteer with Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful to collect recycled items this weekend, according to KNB Executive Director Katie Blevins.
“Techcycle Saturday is a great volunteer and sponsorship option for groups and businesses,” Blevins said. “It’s an opportunity to get your names, and faces, in front of a large number of people while performing a service that benefits the environment and affects the sustainability of our community.”
Items accepted are computers, including towers, flat screen monitors and laptops, hard drives, printers, cables, mice, keyboards, DVD/VCR players, projectors, radios, telephones, cell phones, networking equipment/routers, copiers, fax machines and cords/wires.
Items not accepted include TVs, CRT monitors, major appliances, such as washers, dryers and refrigerators, cameras, small household appliances, such as blenders, toasters, coffee makers and vacuum cleaners, ink and toner cartridges. Best Buy in Lufkin will accept TVs for recycling for a fee.
Electronics recycling is also accepted at Staples, 4608 North St. Acceptable items include computers, monitors, laptops, printers and other items. Items larger than a printer or computer monitor will not be accepted.
