Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) announced SFA’s The BIG Event as a winner of the 2017 Ruthe Jackson Youth Leadership Award on May 19, 2017. The Ruthe Jackson Youth Leadership Award is one of eleven categories in the Keep Texas Beautiful Youth & Educator Awards and recognizes the efforts and leadership of young people and youth-oriented organizations who beautify their community and create cleaner, greener campuses, parks and neighborhoods. Each year, Keep Texas Beautiful recognizes the efforts of young people, educators, and educational institutions that promote beautification, waste reduction and litter prevention through environmental education and community activism. SFA’s The BIG Event promotes unity between campus and community as students come together for one day to express their gratitude through service for the support from the Nacogdoches community. Students work in teams to complete projects across Nacogdoches County as a way to say “thank you!” to the community for their support of SFA students.
As a Keep Texas Beautiful Affiliate, Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful nominated SFA’s The BIG Event because of the great impact on the community due to the hard work of all volunteers involved. Volunteers with SFA’s The BIG Event worked with Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful to clear 330 pounds of litter from local highways, maintain the KNB tree farm and relocate hundreds of jonquil bulbs along Banita Creek Trail.
“The BIG Event volunteers that worked on KNB projects provided such a valuable service to the community and our organization,” said Katie Blevins, KNB executive director. “They picked up roadside litter, beautified a local park trail and readied our tree farm for future tree sales and fundraising projects.”

About SFA’s The BIG Event
Throughout the years, the Nacogdoches community has shown endless support to the students of Stephen F. Austin State University. For this reason, The BIG Event strives to reciprocate that appreciation to all residents. Each year, SFA students spend one day performing various service projects all across Nacogdoches County. The BIG Event is focused solely on saying “thanks.” Therefore, projects for this event are not based on need or socioeconomic status – ANYONE can apply for a project to be completed by our students!
Grayson, Louisiana, graduate student Korey Burns is this year’s recipient of the Gary Parker Art Scholarship.
The SFA Friends of the Visual Arts established the scholarship in honor of the retired SFA School of Art faculty member who was employed at the university for 31 years. Parker not only taught courses but also directed the school’s Summer Art Academy program for children and served as the gallery preparator.
The FVA has established scholarships in the name of retiring SFA School of Art professors who were employed in the School of Art for minimum of 10 years before retirement and who contributed in a significant way to the mission of the Friends of the Visual Arts board and its fundraising activities, such as consistently donating art for fundraisers, by providing monetary assistance, or by serving on FVA committees or board.
Lauren Selden, assistant professor of metal/jewelry in the School of Art, nominated Burns for the award. She said Burns “illustrates a strong work ethic, which allows her to solve problems, learn about new materials and set higher goals for herself and those around her.”
A student of Selden’s since 2014, Burns has assisted in teaching an art metals introductory class.
“I have witnessed her giving demonstrations and working individually with students,” Selden wrote in her nomination letter. “This past semester, she has also balanced a busy schedule assisting in the metals studio, working with students in open shop, and completing a challenging course schedule. These organizational skills will serve her well in her professional endeavors.
“Korey has continued to grow when exploring content behind her artwork,” Selden added. “I have been especially impressed in the past year to see her as a permanent fixture in the studio – always working.”
The SFA Friends of the Visual Arts is made up of community members who support the arts in East Texas and provide monetary assistance to students enrolling in the School of Art by conducting fundraisers, such as the annual 12 x 12 event every July.
