SFA’s Dr. Brandon Fox awarded Montgomery Professorship for Humane Education

Dr. Brandon Fox, associate professor of elementary education at Stephen F. Austin State University, was awarded the 2017-20 Montgomery Professorship for Humane Education in the James I. Perkins College of Education.

Dr. Brandon Fox, associate professor of elementary education at Stephen F. Austin State University, was awarded the 2017-20 Montgomery Professorship for Humane Education in the James I. Perkins College of Education.

Dr. Brandon Fox, associate professor of elementary education at Stephen F. Austin State University, was awarded the 2017-20 Montgomery Professorship for Humane Education in the James I. Perkins College of Education.

The professorship was established by the late Charlotte Baker Montgomery in memory of her husband, Roger. The professorship’s purpose is to encourage and perpetuate the teaching of humane education concepts and methods in public and private elementary and secondary schools through the support of teacher preparation in humane education.

“It is an honor to expand on the legacy of Charlotte and Roger Montgomery and to be recognized as valuing humane education,” Fox said. “Receiving this professorship is exciting because it provides an opportunity to further advance humane education through my research, service and teaching.”

Humane education is a process that assists children in developing compassion, a sense of justice and respect for all living things. Humane education helps children gain the knowledge and understanding to behave according to these principles and foster a sense of responsibility needed to affirm and act upon humane education principles.

Fox submitted a plan for the professorship that included ideas regarding professional development, establishing a humane education resource library, and expanding local, state and regional connections for humane education. His plan also suggested creating opportunities for field experiences for kindergarten through 12th grade students, as well as pre-service and in-service teachers.

Dr. Judy Abbott, dean of SFA’s James I. Perkins College of Education, and Dr. Elizabeth Vaughan, chair of the Department of Elementary Education, selected Fox for the award.

As the recipient of the professorship, Fox will manage the humane education program, which includes teaching and recruiting students for courses and professional development in the field; maintaining a collection of books and humane education materials for students, teachers and the public; encouraging humane education projects and activities; serving as a liaison with the Texas Environmental Education Advisory Committee; and annually attending animal welfare organization conferences.

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful and the City of Nacogdoches will roll out a new recycling and illegal dumping brochure and online database in the fall of 2017. These tools will provide information related to current recycling options in Nacogdoches as well as information about illegal dumping.

“This update will bring the most current information together in one place, making it easier to know where to go to recycle and what can be recycled,” said Cheryl Bartlett, Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful Board Member.

Recycling options are different in every city and can change with business turnover, volunteer involvement and nonprofit funding. Some examples include technology recycling through Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful, glass recycling supported by C&R Kutt Bottles, and stores like Staples and Lowe’s that accept specific types of recycled materials. Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful Executive Director Katie Blevins is calling for help from the community to update the recycling information online and to be printed in the brochure.

“Individual responsibility is important to Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful as an organization. It’s the link in our mission statement between recycling, beautification and litter abatement,” Blevins said.”We want the community to have a chance to share knowledge about new opportunities and changes to local recycling options.”

In addition to recycling promotion, illegal dumping will also be a topic included in the brochure and online at keepnacbeautiful.org/recycle. “Our goal is to educate the community about what qualifies as illegal dumping and provide a method for citizens to report illegal dumping when they see it,” said Cary Walker, City of Nacogdoches Public Works Manager.

Contact Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful by phone at 936-560-5624, email at info@keepnacbeautiful.org, or Facebook @keepnacbeautiful before August 20 to report new recycling opportunities or changes.

Donate to support enhancements to the recycling program in Nacogdoches. Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that promotes waste reduction, litter management and beautification throughout Nacogdoches County.
