TS HARVEY LOCAL UPDATE 28 AUG 17 1630HRS.

Tropical Storm Harvey continues to dump rain in the Houston area and areas along the Texas coast. Houston and surrounding areas are experiencing record setting flash flooding. DO NOT attempt to travel to the Houston area at this time. US highway 59 is closed due to flood waters south of Livingston, Texas.

Currently no shelters have been opened in Nacogdoches. We are following the request of state emergency operations officials. Shelters are opened on a pre-determined state plan to better insure the safety of those evacuating as well as taking into consideration possible local needs. If we are notified to open shelters, they will be opened quickly, and information will be disseminated at that time.

Gasoline is currently available in Nacogdoches. A check with distributors indicates no supply problems.

A check of our two creeks in the city at 2:00 p.m. today showed them flowing almost normally and well within their banks. The ground is currently saturated, and more light rain is forecast. Persons in low lying areas should be mindful of the possibility of rising water within the next 24 hours. Low-lying areas, areas near the creeks and streets that are prone to flooding may flood if heavy rainfall is experienced. Never drive through water that is over curb high. TURN AROUND-DON’T DROWN!

FORECAST: Nacogdoches County remains under a FLASH FLOOD WATCH. Light rain should continue through Tuesday.
