The Junior League of Lufkin Announces Their 3rd Annual Second Chance Rummage Sale

For more than 60 years, the women of The Junior League of Lufkin have been working to build a better community and we are excited to continue this work through fundraising project, The JLL’s Second Chance Rummage Sale!

The Second Chance Rummage Sale will serve the community directly by providing much needed items at greatly reduced prices and by donating hundreds of dollars in Second Chance Cash vouchers to other organizations such as the Family Crisis Center of East Texas – The Women’s Shelter, the Mosaic Center, and Buckner Family Services just to name a few. These clients will be able to redeem the Second Chance Cash vouchers for much needed merchandise at the Rummage Sale.

Poverty remains an urgent problem within the United States and we witness it each day right here in our own backyard. With close to 20% of Angelina County residents living below the poverty level, it is critical that we serve those in need. Many of our neighbors in Angelina County cannot afford basic items required for daily living such as food, clothing and shelter and others will be overlooked for employment opportunities because of these limited resources.

The Second Chance Rummage Sale has amazing deals and fabulous finds all to benefit our community on October 20th and 21st! Admission to Rummage Sale is $2 and hours are Friday from 8:00a.m.-1:00p.m. and 5:00p.m.-7:00p.m. and Saturday from 8:00a.m.-2:00p.m.

The Breaking Winds Bassoon Quartet promises fun concert program

The Breaking Winds Bassoon Quartet, featuring bassoonists Brittany Harrington-Smith, Yuki Katayama, Kara LaMoure and Lauren Yu Ziemba, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The Breaking Winds Bassoon Quartet, featuring bassoonists Brittany Harrington-Smith, Yuki Katayama, Kara LaMoure and Lauren Yu Ziemba, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The dynamic and creative Breaking Winds Bassoon Quartet will present “A Broken Anthology of Western Music” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The quartet is an artist-run creative project by bassoonists Brittany Harrington-Smith, Yuki Katayama, Kara LaMoure and Lauren Yu Ziemba. Their repertoire disregards genre, with favorites from the worlds of classical, pop, jazz, soundtrack and folk music adapted for the ensemble by its members, according to Lee Goodhew, assistant professor of bassoon in the SFA School of Music.

“Each member is a well-respected performer and musician in her own right,” Goodhew said, “and besides being a lot of fun, the quartet’s show displays the broad artistic range of the bassoon.”

Known for their stage antics, the quartet uses choreography, accessory instruments, props and skits to add theatrical elements to their performances, Goodhew explained.

According to member LaMoure, Breaking Winds “hijacks chestnuts of the repertoire and restores the bassoon to its rightful place in each.”

“All music in the period between Biber and Bieber is fair game, now presented in arrangements for bassoon quartet with enhancements like kazoo virtuosity, marching band-style choreography, reed squeaks and pop progressions,” LaMoure said. “Over the course of this whirlwind tour, the listener gains a new appreciation for the bassoon and a new view of classical music history. Even better, they may go home with confetti in their hair.”

Among the program selections are “Piece en forme de habanero” by Maurice Ravel, arranged by LaMoure; Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture;” and The Breaking Winds Bassoon Quartet’s own medley, “2017 Overture.”

“This medley of recent popular songs is performed ‘BWBQ style,’ with the quartet members performing choreographed dances and getting up close and personal with the audience,” LaMoure said.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu.

Wind Ensemble to perform music of Grammy Award-winning Daugherty

The Wind Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform a concert featuring the music of American composer Michael Daugherty at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

A Grammy Award winner, Daugherty is professor of composition at the University of Michigan.

“He will be at SFA for the concert and to speak to our classes,” said Fred J. Allen, director of bands and the conductor for the Wind Ensemble. “We will perform three of his compositions on this concert.”

Daugherty’s “Dead Elvis” will feature SFA School of Music faculty member Lee Goodhew, assistant professor of bassoon, and other music faculty.

“This piece is written for a group of six performers who accompany the solo bassoon,” Allen said.

Joining Goodhew will be music faculty members Chris Ayer, clarinet; Jennifer Dalmas, violin; Carlos Gaviria, bass; Jacob Walburn, trumpet; Deb Scott, trombone; and Brad Meyer, drums.

“Elvis fans will not want to miss this homage to the King of Rock and Roll,” Allen said.

Daugherty is one of the most commissioned, performed and recorded composers on the American concert music scene today. He has been hailed by London’s The Times as “a master icon maker” with “maverick imagination, fearless structural sense and meticulous ear.”

Daugherty has received numerous awards, distinctions and fellowships for his music, including a Fulbright Fellowship, the Kennedy Center Friedheim Award, the Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Stoeger Prize from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, among others.

Daugherty’s “Rio Grande” and “Of War and Peace” are also on the program.

“SFA was part of the commission that produced ‘Of War and Peace,'” Allen said.

The band will also perform the John Philip Sousa march “Boy Scouts of America.”

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu.

Interior design students at SFA help plan station for Douglass Volunteer Fire Department

Stephen F. Austin State University interior design student Rebecca Washington measures the distance from a historical monument to the road with her classmates as they participate in a charrette, an intense design period. For three days, interior design students at SFA helped plan a new fire station for the Douglass Volunteer Fire Department.

Approximately 60 Stephen F. Austin State University interior design students recently participated in a charrette, an intense design period, to help plan and design a new fire station for the Douglass Volunteer Fire Department.

During this three-day period, eight teams of interior design students of various classifications engaged in every phase of the design process, which started with a visit to the proposed building site. Students visited the site off Texas Highway 21 in Douglass to obtain measurements and sketch the location. Douglass fire department personnel were on hand to answer questions.

Students also toured the Appleby Volunteer Fire Department to gain a better understanding of how a fire station operates and to visualize the layout of a station.

“It was very eye opening to see the ground zero of a project and how it all starts,” said Jordan Sims, Euless sophomore. “I realized there is a lot more you have to take into consideration such as tree location when building a project.”

On the second day of the charrette, James Scott with Mueller Inc., a company that specializes in steel buildings and metal roofing, gave a presentation on steel buildings, and Lonnie Tatum, former fire chief with Highland Village and current consultant with Kirkpatrick Architectural Studio in Denton, presented on fire departments. Students also interviewed members of the Douglass Volunteer Fire Department about their vision for the new facility.

“The presentations gave me a better understanding of what needs to be included in a fire station. It’s different than what you see on TV,” Sims said.

This project required students to create a workable plan for the facility. Students were given building criteria that included specifics the department hopes to incorporate into the new station. In their plans, teams prepared schematics and implemented Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and security as well as a floor plan with exterior and interior elevations and perspectives, materials, and color schemes. On the final day of the charrette, students presented their project plans to members of the Douglass Volunteer Fire Department.

“We as faculty members feel strongly about the importance of offering our talents and our students’ talents to the community and giving back what we can through design,” said Sally Ann Swearingen, associate professor of interior design at SFA.

Each year as a volunteer service to the community, SFA’s interior design department participates in a similar project. Past projects include working with the Boys and Girls Club in Nacogdoches, Lufkin and Douglass as well as Love In the Name of Christ, a nonprofit Christian organization.

Dr. Mitzi Perritt, professor, and Leisha Bridwell, associate professor, also were involved in the project.

SFA kinesiology students, athletics department partner for ‘Be The Match’ marrow donor drive

Stephen F. Austin State University students enrolled in entry-level kinesiology courses partnered with SFA’s athletics department and student-athletes to host a Be The Match National Marrow Donor Program community drive on the university campus.

Approximately 100 SFA students in courses taught by Patty Berthot, SFA lecturer in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, and many student-athletes worked to promote the drive and encourage others to become bone marrow donors.

“This program is really important. I’m biased because one of my best friends had a bone marrow transplant in the 1990s,” Berthot said. “It’s great to see students working to help others.”

During a four-day period, students set up tents in front of the Baker Pattillo Student Center and near the statue of Stephen F. Austin to spread awareness and sign up donors. As a prelude to the Battle of the Piney Woods football game, the effort also served as a competition between SFA and Sam Houston State University to see which institution could sign up the most people for the registry. SFA had 257 people sign up to become donors, and students logged more than 186 volunteer hours.

“We are using this football rivalry to do something good,” said Loree McCary, SFA assistant athletic director. “With the two groups of students working together, we made this a very successful drive.”

SFA’s women’s basketball team first became involved with Be The Match in 2011. Since then, SFA athletics has adopted the program and collaborated with Berthot to continue bringing drives to campus.

Be The Match has managed the largest and most diverse bone marrow registry in the world during the past 25 years, according to the organization’s website. People who sign up for the registry commit to being a marrow donor until their 61st birthday or until they wish to be removed from the registry. Bone marrow transplants can help save patients battling certain types of blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, and genetic diseases.

Brian Allison, community engagement representative for Be The Match, was on site helping educate potential donors.

“We work with patients in every state who are battling blood or bone illnesses,” Allison said. “Basically, if their doctor tells them their only chance for survival is a stem cell or marrow transplant, they have to find a matching donor. About 30 percent of the patients will have a match within their family, but 70 percent do not, so they must rely on a stranger to save their life.”

Allison spoke to several SFA classes, including Berthot’s. Berthot explained how the community drive provided a real-world example of concepts discussed in class.
