Deal Me In: A Night at the Stone Fort Saloon

The Nacogdoches Public Library and the Stone Fort Museum invite all ages to a one-of-a-kind event on Saturday, October 7th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Stone Fort Museum will open for this limited time as the Stone Fort Saloon with card games, barroom food, music and prizes.

Everyone starts their evening with a pocket full of Republic of Texas replica bills. Win or lose at the card tables, or mosey on over to the bar for some sausage and root beer. Trade your earnings in for prizes like a Stone Fort bar towel or shot glass. Leave your six-shooter at home because we’ll have a shooting gallery with rubber band pistols. You might win a set of marbles only to lose them. If you really want to keep your stash of cash, play Go Fish at the kid’s table, but mind your manners!

“Deal Me In: Night at the Stone Fort Saloon” is part of the Nacogdoches Public Library One Book: One City project featuring Charles Portis’ 1968 novel, True Grit. Leather Tooling Workshop at the Public Library
One Book, One City Event

The Nacogdoches Public Library invites participants ages 13 and up to a Leather Tooling Workshop on Friday, October 13th at 4:30 p.m. Attendees will learn how to add decoration to leather using the same kinds of tools that would have been used in the 19th century. SFA Art Professor Candace Hicks will facilitate the workshop. This event is a part of the One Book, One City initiative that celebrates the novel True Grit by Charles Portis for the month of October.

Kids and Teens Cooking Contest

The Nacogdoches Public Library announces the date for the annual Kids & Teens Cooking Contest. This year’s contest, for children ages 5-17 years, will be held on Saturday, November 4th.

“For the past couple of years, the library has had several cooking and gardening programs for children and adults. This fall’s schedule features the cooking contest, the cookbook club for adults and the School Gardening Cooking Class later in the month. The library also has a free seed library so kids and families can learn to grown their own vegetables and flowers. With all these programs, we hope to foster a sense of community and fun. We also want to challenge people to expand their horizons by learning new skills,” said Mercedes Franks, Library Director.

The deadline to enter the contest is Friday, November 3rd at 5:30 pm. Rules and entry forms are available at the public library. This year, contestants can also register online at www.ci.nacogdoches.tx.us/library. Items are to be prepared at home and brought to the library by 11:00 am on November 4th. SFA colts place at world championship

Austin State University equine program successfully exhibited two weanling colts from the university’s breeding program at the 2017 American Paint Horse Association World Championship Show in Fort Worth. Make Me Move, a solid paint-bred colt, was named Reserve Breeder’s Trust Futurity Champion and placed sixth in the solid paint-bred Weanling Stallions Class, while Remember the Name, also a solid paint-bred colt, placed fifth in the same class. “The success of this world show, coupled with the success of the Palomino Horse Breeders Association World Show when I showed Missbehavenhollywood, another SFA-owned horse, puts us on the map as not only contenders in the show pen, but also as breeders of world show-quality horses,” said Michaelle Coker, SFA equine center supervisor. “This will only boost our program and help us reach our goals of a winning show team and a viable breeding program.”

The colts were born this winter at SFA’s Walter C. Todd Agricultural Research Center and are a significant milestone in the growth of the university’s equine program that received a donation of seven broodmares in 2015 from Trudy Day and Nancy Batzloff.

“It’s a very small brood mare herd, but it’s mighty,” Coker said. “Fifty-percent of our broodmare herd had offspring competing at the world championship show this year.”

In addition to Make Me Move and Remember the Name, SFA-born Smokn Lopin was shown by a representative of Hat Creek Ranch and placed fourth in Open Ranch Riding and eighth in Open Ranch Trail Riding.

Coker said she believes this is the first time that a university has shown a horse they bred at the American Paint Horse Association World Championship.

Students are an integral component of the expanding program and play key roles in every aspect of foaling, training and showing.

Kelsey Chatigny and Sarah Bone, both senior animal science majors, were enrolled in the equine reproduction course that monitored the gestation and birth of both colts. They continued their direct involvement through an independent study course designed to prepare students to work in the equine industry. With assistance from Coker, Bone and Chatigny fed, groomed, trained and exercised the colts six days a week in preparation for the world show.

“We spent the entire summer at the equine center at all times of the day,” Chatigny said. “We learned a lot of time management and organizational skills.”

Their steadfast care undoubtedly paid off as the two colts were led through a litany of inspections from judges who examined everything from the colts’ teeth to the manner in which they move.

Cellist Ružević to perform at SFA

Ruzevic-NikolaRenowned cellist Nikola Nino Ružević will present a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Ružević, who is associate professor of cello and chamber music and the coordinator of chamber music studies at the University of North Texas, will perform with his wife, pianist Lara Ružević.

The program will feature Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata for Cello, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise,” and Croatian cello compositions. The concert will also feature a cello ensemble composition involving students of Dr. Evgeni Raychev, instructor of cello in the SFA School of Music.

A native of Croatia, Ružević has performed in many countries around the world where he has received critical acclaim for his artistry. An active soloist and chamber musician, Ružević has performed in world-renowned halls, such as The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Musikverein in Vienna, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo.

Ružević has held teaching positions at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, University of Texas at Arlington and University of Zagreb, Croatia.

Lara Ruzevic is an international concert pianist and pedagogue. Her career has taken her to Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Slovakia and the U.S. Active as a chamber musician and a collaborative artist, she has been on faculty of numerous music festivals and frequently performs with UNT music faculty and students.

SFA hosts 14 exchange students

This semester, SFA is hosting its most diverse group of foreign exchange students with 14 undergraduate and graduate students representing six countries. Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of International Programs is hosting 14 exchange students from six different locations this semester.

“This has been one of the most diverse groups of foreign exchange students the university has hosted,” Heather Catton, SFA director of international programs, said.

The group comprises two students from Pakistan, two from Tunisia, five from France, three from the United Kingdom, one from Taiwan and one from Malta. Eleven of the students are undergraduates while three are graduate students.

The students participate in exchanges through different programs.

Two programs are offered by the U.S. State Department: Global UGRAD, which is part of a broader effort to promote a better understanding of the U.S. abroad, especially among future world leaders, and the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship, which allows students to develop a deeper understanding of American culture and gain new skills that will help them further the economic growth and development of their country.

Along with the U.S. State Department programs, students come from the Rose Bruford theatre exchange program, the LaRochelle business exchange program and the ISEP world-wide study abroad program.

Sujata Panjwani, a Pakistan exchange student through the Global UGRAD program, said studying in America will help both her education and personal growth.

“I have a great desire to enhance and share my knowledge and explore the widely diversified cultures in the U.S.,” Panjwani said. “Being a Pakistani and coming from a different culture, I have a lot to share in terms of my beliefs, perception and ideology.”

Mariem Hmidy, an exchange student from Tunisia through the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship, believes her time in America will benefit her when she returns home.

“Tunisia needs its young citizens to help make the country better,” Hmidy said. “Tunisia needs active young people to help its economic and political needs. This exchange program teaches me how to be a better citizen.”

While at SFA, Hmidy will undergo career preparation activities in the fall and an internship in the spring.

The SFA Office of International Programs works to ensure the students thrive during their time at the university. The program works to help students easily transition to living in America. Many exchange students deal with a myriad of issues and new challenges, such as introductions to new and different foods, academic course offerings and lack of public transportation. The office also verifies that credits acquired at SFA will transfer when the exchange students return to their home countries.

Catton said she encourages the exchange students to participate in different activities while studying abroad.

“A lot of students get to experience what life is like at a U.S. university while they are here, such as enjoying social clubs and joining fraternities and sororities. Many foreign colleges do not have the same social opportunities we do in the U.S., so these students really take advantage of those activities while here.”

The Office of International Programs hopes to expand the number of exchange programs SFA offers. In the spring, Catton said they are planning to add Université Jean Monnet in France to the list of participants.

Día de los Muertos Fiesta in Downtown Nacogdoches

The 5th Annual Día de los Muertos Fiesta will be held in Downtown Nacogdoches on Saturday, November 4th from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Nacogdoches Public Library is partnering with the SFA Art Galleries and Cole Art Center to present this year’s event which will be held on the downtown square around the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Organizers are inviting businesses, organizations, and other groups to register to participate, and forms will be available at the Nacogdoches Public Library at 1112 North Street and at the Cole Art Center at 329 East Main Street. “This event has become a local treasure thanks to the passion and hard work of John Handley and Alisa Steed at the Cole Art Center, and we’re so pleased with this year’s new location on the square,” says Crystal Hicks, assistant library director. “We welcome a variety of vendors and activity stations, and there will be plenty of entertainment, including a costume contest.” Proceeds from the event will benefit the Friends of the Nacogdoches Public Library. Second Story Tours: Unmasking Downtown Nacogdoches

Webp.net-compress-imageThe City of Nacogdoches Main Street Program is excited to announce tickets are on sale now for Second Story Tours, set for Saturday, October 22, 2017, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in historic downtown Nacogdoches.

This year’s Second Story Tours will feature seven downtown lofts and homes lined up for ticket holders to tour in addition to refreshments and light appetizers will be served at select tour locations.

“This is a great opportunity to spend the day downtown shopping and touring properties, that the general public rarely get to see,” Amy Mehaffey, Communications/Main Street Director said. “We chose to hold this event on a Sunday afternoon to encourage visitors to shop at our downtown shops. Our merchants have recently expanded their hours to accommodate shoppers who visit on Sundays.”

The theme for this year’s event comes from Stephen F. Austin State University and their homecoming events. The Second Story Tours will be held during homecoming weekend, and visitors will have a chance to purchase tickets at Alumni Corner during the Homecoming football game.

part0Parents visiting for homecoming and the Parent’s Day events are encouraged to participate in the tours to see a new side of Downtown Nacogdoches. Tickets are $25 and are available now at the Visitor’s Center, the Fredonia Hotel, and online here! You can also find the link for online tickets on the Nacogdoches Main Street Facebook Page. Proceeds from this event will go to the beautification of historic downtown Nacogdoches.

True Grit Exhibit Opening

Take a sneak peek behind the scenes of a western classic with the City of Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department at the True Grit Exhibit opening. During the month of October set sketches by Gregory Hill, who worked as an illustrator on the 2010 Coen Brothers True Grit movie, will be displayed at the Nacogdoches Railroad Depot – 101 Old Tyler Road. Visitors will be able to see early sketches of the Monarch Boarding house, Stone Hills and the streets of Fort Smith, Arkansas as well as get a little insight to the movie making process with quotes from Mr. Hill.

The exhibit’s grand opening on October 5th at 7:00pm will be one of the first of the One Book, One City festivities that are to take place throughout the month. Be sure to get a copy of Charles Portis’ True Grit for yourself from the Nacogdoches Public Library so you’re well versed in this Western classic before our month long event series kicks off in October.
