Stephen F. Austin State University Professor Dr. Linda Black received the World History Association’s Pioneers in World History Award, which annually recognizes distinguished scholars or educators.

“This is such a special honor because I began my career as a high school world history teacher and have been involved in this field for more than four decades,” said Black, who is a faculty member in the James I. Perkins College of Education’s Department of Secondary Education and Educational Leadership.

The World History Association is a professional association of scholars, teachers and students organized to promote world history by encouraging teaching, research, publications and personal interactions.

“I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with outstanding university scholars and other educators who have helped develop a truly global vision for this field where students, no matter where they live, can see themselves and their cultures represented in history,” Black said.

Reflecting on her career, Black has experienced many milestones and academic achievements. She began as a high school teacher in San Antonio and later moved to Houston where she taught honors, gifted and talented, advanced placement, and English as a Second Language students.

“One of my favorite parts of teaching world history is the students’ excitement when they discover the human side of history, particularly the stories and the voices of the people involved,” Black said. “History is such a vital subject for helping understand the world around us, as well as for enabling students to develop lifelong, critical-thinking skills.”

Black has served in many capacities statewide, including the College Board Test Development committee that created the advanced placement world history course and the first two exams; and the World History Association Executive Council. Nationally, Black has been a member of the National Council for the Social Studies, National Center for History in the Schools and the Society for History Education.

As an educator, she continues to conduct research, publishing and editing articles, and serving on editorial boards. Her work has been published in myriad journals and textbooks.

Students develop research skills through SFA College of Sciences and Mathematics’ undergraduate research program

Gathered around tables in a classroom of the Math Building, students and faculty from departments across the College of Sciences and Mathematics discussed the research – ranging from characterizing anticancer agents to investigating geologic structures – they have spent weeks conducting as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience.

The results of this research will be showcased in a poster session open to the public at 2 p.m. Friday in the Math Building, Room 123.

According to Dr. Michael Janusa, professor and chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the program helps students succeed after graduation.

“The program … will develop the critical skills needed for our students to be successful after graduation,” Janusa said.

An interdepartmental initiative, the program includes students from biology, chemistry, biochemistry, geology, physics, engineering and mathematics and funds 14 research projects for five weeks. After being paired with a faculty member, students spend 10 to 12 hours per week on research and attend weekly meetings with other participants to interact and participate in discussions.

Part of the program’s success can be attributed to its emphasis on cross-departmental learning, said SFA chemistry student Samuel Conlin.

“You get a lot of interaction with other professors in other fields,” said Conlin, a junior from Lufkin. “They have a lot of different ideas, and you get another angle on your research.”

For more information about the program, contact Janusa at janusama@sfasu.edu.

SFA head football coach resigns

Former Stephen F. Austin State University head football coach Clint Conque announced his resignation today.

“Today I announce my decision to step down as the head football coach at Stephen F. Austin,” Conque said. “Although I have remained confident in the ongoing investigation into the potential violation of university policy, as a family of faith and out of respect to my profession, I do not want this situation to be a further distraction to the 2018 football team and season. I deeply care for my players and wish them great success this season and beyond.”

Conque joined the SFA athletic staff in 2014.

“It has been a privilege to serve the university and to work with many outstanding players and coaches – past and present. I am proud of the foundation that is in place both on and off the field,” he said. “I have arrived at this decision on my own and look to move forward in my career.”

SFA Athletic Director Ryan Ivey said the department is appreciative of Conque’s years of service as head football coach.

“At this point we remain focused on the 2018 season and the work our student-athletes and staff have done and will continue to do leading up to kickoff on September 1,” Ivey said.

According to SFA officials, Jeff Byrd will continue to serve as interim head coach for SFA’s football program through the 2018 season.

“We will re-evaluate the leadership structure of our team at the conclusion of the year,” Ivey said.

SFA offers online Master of Arts in Teaching

Educators who want to complete their master’s degree in teaching without having to relocate or travel can do so through an online program offered at Stephen F. Austin State University.

SFA’s James I. Perkins College of Education is now offering a revised 30-hour online Master of Arts in Teaching that allows educators who have completed an early childhood through 12th grade teaching certification the opportunity to finish their graduate degree.

Many students who received their initial certification — completing the first 18 hours of the 30-hour master’s program — will only need four additional courses to finish the Master of Arts in Teaching.

Students who received their certification in 2008 or after are eligible to enroll in the program and use their master’s-level course credits.

Additionally, SFA has been granted permission to allow a one-time acceptance of students with expired course credits if the student applies and is accepted into the program by Aug. 1, 2019.

“Teachers with a graduate degree are qualified to serve in leadership positions on their campus or in their district,” said Dr. Heather Olson Beal, associate professor in the Department of Secondary Education and Educational Leadership. “Many districts also offer a salary increase for teachers who have advanced degrees.”

Olson Beal explained all the coursework is online, and students can expect to meet and engage with practicing teachers across the state, learn about current issues in education and applications of technology in the classroom, and how to conduct action research in their classroom.

For more information, contact Olson Beal at SecEdMAT@sfasu.edu, or visit sfasu.edu/secondaryed/143.asp.
