On April 2, 2013, Investigators with the NCSO, along with the Sheriff’s Administration, began follow up into the numerous burglaries that have occurred in Nacogdoches County. The primary focus was on the more recent burglaries that have occurred in the Melrose area, however it was quickly learned that the organization reached throughout our county.
The investigation began with little or no leads. Therefore, Investigators began to put small pieces together from citizen’s reports from suspicious activity. Once Investigators met, a plan was formulated and the following results occurred from proactive awareness from our citizens and good police work.
Two Burglaries that had occurred between Cr 503 and CR 504 were solved and warrants have been obtained for a suspect in the case. Warrants for the arrest of Calvin Otis Jackson, 56 years of age have been issued for Burglary of a habitation 2nd felony.

While Investigators were looking for another suspect in the Appleby Burglaries, Investigators recovered three stolen laptops, one of which was stolen from Mississippi, and investigators are working to identify three possible suspects in these cases.
Throughout this whole investigation, the goal was to reach the main party involved for the thefts and to locate the people who have been selling the stolen property. Investigators have had identified the main target for a majority of the burglary investigations, and an arrest warrant was issued for Rickey Spurr, 39 years of age and Thomas Stroud, 28 years of age.
Upon Investigators serving the arrest warrant on both suspects, Investigators had probable cause for a search warrant of Spurr’s residence, who resided in an upper scale neighborhood in the city of Nacogdoches. Search of the residence also located more stolen property, methamphetamine and ammunition that had been taken in another burglary. The suspect was also charged with Burglary, Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of stolen property.
All together a total of three search warrants were issued this past week. A total of 29 additional charges have been filed and investigators are in the process of linking all the solved cases to each suspect.
Approximately ten thousand dollars worth of property have been recovered and many of these investigations are still open for further review.
The Nacogdoches County District Attorney has been working with the NCSO and has assisted tremendously in the possibility of an organized criminal activity case.
The Sheriff Office has arrested 12 suspects and several arrests are pending.
However, I feel that it is extremely important to not only send a message to our criminals, but to show our citizens our due diligence in resolving crime in our county.
Narcotics and burglaries go hand in hand; twenty years ago someone would steal for themselves and keep the property. However, in changing times, the people are stealing to support a habit and lifestyle of narcotics usage.
