M. Grace Thornhill, Redwater senior chemistry major at Stephen F. Austin State University, has been selected to be inducted into the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Honor Society.

The honor society recognizes students for their scholarly achievements, research and outreach. Selected students actively participate in their ASBMB student chapter, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.4 and demonstrate achievement in undergraduate research and science outreach.

“Gracie’s achievements exemplify the kind of transformative experience that students get from our department and the university,” said Dr. Odutayo Odunuga, interim chair of the Department of Chemistry. “Gracie is one of our top graduating students. She has taken advantage of the opportunities offered by our department, college and university to have education with an edge.”

Thornhill also received the College of Sciences and Mathematics Dean’s Excellence Award. This award was created to honor and recognize an outstanding, graduating undergraduate student who embodies the spirit of the college’s vision: to empower the next generation of science, technology, engineering and mathematics professionals to lead and serve in a changing world.

In addition to her induction into the ASBMB Honor Society, she participated in the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program at Texas State University last summer. This opportunity is open to 10 undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution in association with the National Science Foundation. Upon her graduation, Thornhill will join a postbaccalaureate program at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
