SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs accepting service projects for MLK Day of Service

Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs is preparing for its annual MLK Day of Service, slated for Jan. 15, 2024, and is currently accepting service project requests for the Nacogdoches community.

The MLK Day of Service is an annual event that honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. During the event, participants will volunteer their time and assist local agencies with various community service projects that will positively impact the Nacogdoches community.

OMA is now taking service project requests from a variety of individuals and groups, including nonprofit organizations and churches, private residences and parks, among others. Past projects have included painting, landscaping and cleaning.

“As we gear up for this year’s installment of MLK Day of Service, we are reaching out to the Nacogdoches community for assistance and support,” said Dr. Veronica Beavers, OMA director and deputy chief diversity officer. “Witnessing the impactful participation of more than 900 enthusiastic SFA students during last year’s event, we are once again asking local community members to contribute service projects that will create lasting ripples of positivity and change within Nacogdoches and SFA. Let’s translate Dr. King’s vision into action by nurturing a spirit of togetherness and service right here in our own community.”

SFA faculty, staff and Nacogdoches community members also are invited to serve as site mentors, who are liaisons for the site between volunteers and event staff members. Mentors will ensure volunteers have the information and materials needed to complete the service project.

The MLK Day of Service was initiated to honor the acts of service by the late civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1994, MLK Day was designated as a National Day of Service and is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change.

To submit a project, visit gosfa.com/mlk24. For questions or concerns when requesting your service project, contact OMA at oma@sfasu.edu or (936) 468-1073.

SFA A Cappella Choir to present ‘Sacred and Profane’ concert program

The A Cappella Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the program “Sacred and Profane” when the student choir performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, in Cole Concert Hall, Wright Music Building, on the SFA campus.

Conducted by Dr. Michael Murphy, director of choral activities at SFA, the choir will perform works by Robert Pearsall, Alfred Schnittke, Leonard Bernstein, Josu Elberdin and Joel Thompson. The program of work “brings together the sacred and secular through beautiful and evocative choral music,” according to Murphy.

The concert also features the talents of Dr. Ron Petti, collaborative pianist; Tate Ashby, graduate student conductor from Lufkin; and Ryan Herriage, graduate student conductor from Sulphur Springs.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. To purchase tickets, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or visit sfasu.edu/boxoffice. For additional information, contact the SFA School of Music at (936) 468-4602.
