Students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s horticulture program will host the seventh annual Fall Plant Fair from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at the SFA Plantery, located at 1924 Wilson Drive behind the Agriculture Building. Plants available for purchase include a variety of winter annuals, native perennials, houseplants and succulents, all of which thrive in the East Texas area.
Pam Penick, Texas gardener, speaker and author, will give a presentation based on her new book, “Gardens of Texas” at 7 p.m. She will be available to sell and sign her books following the presentation.
Penick is a Texas gardener who advocates for climate-resilient design. She’s the author of “Gardens of Texas, Lawn Gone!” and “The Water-Saving Garden,” and the voice behind Digging, her influential website about gardening in a hot climate. A former landscape designer, Penick now tends her own garden under live oaks in northwest Austin, keeping an eye out for screech owls and foxes, but wishing for fewer deer. She also leads “Garden Spark,” a speaker series that brings bold ideas in design and ecology to the Austin gardening community.
The Plantery is a program rooted within the Department of Agriculture where students grow and raise plants in the micro-farm, Sprout, the greenhouses, and the teaching gardens around the Agriculture Building. This event is also an opportunity to tour the plant-growing operation and the projects that SFA students have been developing, like the gravel garden and native plant garden.
“Our horticulture program is thriving, and the Fall Plant Fair is an excellent showcase of our student’s hard work and the energy and excitement within our department,” said Dr. Jared Barnes, associate professor of horticulture and steward of the Plantery. “We are so excited Pam is coming to inspire our students about how to better garden in Texas. We also welcome people to come tour the Plantery and buy some plants since all proceeds support student learning.”

Stephen F. Austin State University has been awarded a $134,200 grant through the Data-to-Action for Parenting Students Grant program.
The grant is administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in partnership with the Urban Institute, a nonprofit research organization that provides data and evidence to advance upward mobility and improve the well-being of families and communities.
The competitive Data-to-Action for Parenting Students Grant supports colleges and universities across Texas in developing data-driven strategies to better understand and serve parenting students.
“Through this initiative, SFA will strengthen resources, improve retention and expand success pathways for students who balance academics with parenting responsibilities,” said Dr. Veronica Beavers, associate dean of students – Student Development and Access Services. “We are proud to continue building a campus where all students and their families can thrive.”

Marshall Charloff & The Purple xPeRIeNCE, known as the most authentic celebration of Prince in the world, will kick off Stephen F. Austin State University’s University Series at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Turner Auditorium in the Griffith Fine Arts Building.
The band returns to Nacogdoches following tremendous success of their 2018 University Series performance and enthusiastic response from the university and surrounding communities.
Marshall Charloff & The Purple xPeRIeNCE captures the sound, soul and showmanship of the late musical icon with remarkable authenticity. Co-founded by Marshall Charloff and Matt “Doctor” Fink, former keyboardist from Prince & The Revolution, the band delivers a live performance filled with energy, precision and all the hits fans love.
“It’s as close to the real thing as you’ll find — a full concert experience that audiences of all ages will enjoy,” said Dr. Gary Wurtz, dean of the Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts. “We’re thrilled to bring them back and hope you’ll come out and join us for an unforgettable night.”
Charloff, a Minneapolis native who has performed with members of Prince’s band and with 25 symphonies across North America, leads an all-star lineup of musicians who have played with artists such as Christina Aguilera, The Backstreet Boys and Prince’s own New Power Generation. Together, they perform fan favorites including “Purple Rain,” “Kiss” and “When Doves Cry” with electrifying authenticity.
The concert is sponsored in part by Etech. A reception will follow the concert in the Griffith Fine Arts Building lobby featuring SuSu’s Popcorn and an opportunity to meet the performers.
Tickets are $35 and can be purchased at sfasu.edu/boxoffice. Discounts are available for seniors, students, children and SFA faculty and staff.
