SFA’s engineering physics program earns ABET accreditation

After years of establishing rigorous coursework and robust industry applications, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Bachelor of Science in engineering physics program has been accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology — the quality assurance organization focused on college and university programs in the science, technology, engineering and math disciplines.

ABET accreditation is a stamp of approval that SFA’s engineering physics program meets the high standards required to graduate students ready to enter critical technical fields. More than that, accreditation ensures students are prepared to enter industries leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

“This accreditation reaffirms the strength of our engineering physics program and the quality of education we provide to our students,” said Dr. Rick McDaniel, chair of SFA’s Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy. “With this recognition, we are well-positioned to continue fostering innovation and providing students with the tools they need to excel in their professional journeys.”

SFA’s Department of Engineering leverages student talent with local resources to gain practical industry knowledge and experiences needed to succeed in an engineering career. Students have access to industry-standard tools and technologies, enhancing their hands-on learning experiences.

Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance.

Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia and government, with expertise in the ABET disciplines.

ABET is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization. More information about ABET, its member societies and the accreditation criteria used to evaluate programs can be found at abet.org.

SFA Gardens to host fruit research field day

Stephen F. Austin State University's SFA Gardens will host a fruit research field day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 27 starting at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host a fruit research field day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 27 starting at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host a fruit research field day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 27 featuring kiwifruit, muscadine grapes, blueberries, figs, feijoas and other fruits.

Speakers will include Dr. David Creech, director of SFA Gardens, and Drs. Tim Hartmann and Justin Scheiner, faculty members in Texas A&M University’s Department of Horticultural Sciences.

“While East Texas has suffered through several climate challenges in the last few years, the region has many comparative advantages for the fruit grower,” Creech said. “Low-cost land, easy access to high-quality water sources, big nearby population centers, and more folks interested in growing their own fruit all point to promise in the years ahead.”

The day will start at 9 a.m. with presentations at the Brundrett Conservation Education Building in the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. There will be a break for attendees to leave for lunch, then participants will go to the fruit research plots at Hinds Park and the Mast Arboretum around 1 p.m. Transportation to the fruit plots will be provided.

The cost of the field day is $15 per person. Register in advance online at sfasu.edu/sfagardens at the “Visit & Events” tab or on-site the day of the event.
