Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful(KNB) will receive a thank you card from TJR students on Thursday, January 26, at 9:30 am. The students are involved in a gardening program that was awarded a KNB education grant during the 2016/2017 school year.

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful (KNB) has been invited to receive a thank you presentation from students at Thomas J. Rusk (TJR) Elementary. The presentation will take place on Thursday, January 26, at 9:30 a.m. at the TJR Garden at the intersection of N. Fredonia St. and Arnold St.

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful awarded an education grant in the amount of $400 to support the gardening project at TJR Elementary. The garden is operated by volunteers from Resilient Nacogdoches. Students in the gardening program apply various principles from the Learn, Grow, Eat, Go curriculum developed by the Texas A&M County Extension Office. Objectives include planting, harvesting and sampling vegetables.

“Its wonderful to see all the ways that folks are showing up to support school gardening programs,” said Jocelyn Moore, Resilient Nacogdoches member. “The grant money that KNB awarded to the garden programs at TJR and Carpenter Elementary Schools, as well as the high school, will go a long way to provide quality gardening tools, infrastructure and cooking equipment for the students,” Moore said. “I am proud to live in a city that values teaching its students how to grow their own food and the importance of eating fruits and vegetables.”

TJR Elementary was one of six schools in Nacogdoches County to be awarded an education grant from KNB. Other schools that received grants are Emeline Carpenter Elementary School, Mike Moses Middle School, Central Heights Elementary and Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language. Two projects were funded through KNB grants at Nacogdoches High School.

“All of the grant recipients are creating gardens or implementing recycling programs this year,” Katie Blevins, KNB Executive Coordinator, said.

“Recipients of KNB grants create beautification, litter management and waste reduction projects throughout Nacogdoches County,” said Cheryl Bartlett, KNB board member, “They involve kids and teach them how to improve the quality of the environment in their own community.”

Any pre-K through grade 12 classroom or campus in Nacogdoches County, public or private, was eligible for a grant. Qualifying applications featured beautification and/or education projects that align with one or more of Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful’s core values: litter prevention, beautification, community improvement, waste reduction and resources, conservation, recycling and environmental education.

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, volunteer organization that promotes beautification, waste reduction and litter prevention through individual responsibility across Nacogdoches County. Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful is a local affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful. On the evening of January 3, 2017 the Nacogdoches Municipal Court welcomed the “DAISIES” girl scout troop #102022 to the court to discuss, “Authority and Respect”. The children received take home reminders about safety belts and a coloring book explaining different functions of the court.

Our municipal court team is committed to being involved in educating the community and making sure the public understands the process to make informed decisions regarding a citation received in the City of Nacogdoches.

Clothing Swap at the Public Library

The Judy B. McDonald Public Library invites the public to a Clothing Swap on Saturday, January 28th at 2:30 p.m. Gather gently used items you no longer need and come to a clothing & toy swap party. You may bring adult’s and children’s clothes, as well as toys, to exchange with others. Party leftovers will be donated to a local charity organization. Makerspace: Wind Spinners at the Public Library

Madden 2017 Tournament at the Public Library

Fostering a Healthy Appetite in Children at the Public Library
 
The Judy B. McDonald Public Library invites the community to an interactive workshop, Fostering a Healthy Appetite in Children, on Saturday, February 4th at 1:30 p.m. Participants will learn what influences children’s appetites, why children are picky eaters and tips on how to manage picky eaters. Videos and an interactive scenario will help reinforce takeaways. Darla O’Dwyer, Ph.D., of SFA Human Sciences will be presenting. Makerspace: Movie Makers at the Public Library
 
The Judy B. McDonald Public Library invites the community to Makerspace: Movie Makers in a three-week series, February 6th, 13th, and 20th at 5:30 p.m. Participants will learn about movie magic and write, plan and shoot their very own movies which will be screened on Thursday, February 23rd at 5:30pm. Each week will build on the last, so please plan to participate in each of the three Movie Makers sessions. Makerspace is for anyone age 10 and up. The events are free, but registration is requested. The Lanana and Banita Creek Trail Committee, a sub-committee of the Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, Inc., was recently awarded a grant from the National Board of Realtor’s for beautification of Ab’s Park, a public park located along Banita Creek near the intersection of Powers and Pearl Streets. The funds allowed for the creation of a planting area filled with native plants selected for their value to pollinating and other beneficial insects, which in turn will encourage other forms of wildlife, including song birds. The plant selection follows guidelines allowing the City to apply for designation as a Monarch Waystation and recognition with Parks for Monarchs.

Additionally, two benches and a large sculpture, created by Jeff Brewer, were installed as part of this project. This was a great partnership between, the City of Nacogdoches, the Trails Committee, National Board of Realtor’s and SFA’s Native Plant Center. The park will be a living reminder of the wonderful work Dr. Ab Abernathy put into our growing trail systems.
