The bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the annual “Concert in the Park” Sunday, April 30, in the wooded area along Vista Drive and in front of the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus. The concert begins at 2 p.m. and is free to the public.

SFA alumnus Doice Grant, owner of Tatum Music Company in Longview, will be honored with an induction into the SFA Band Directors’ Hall of Fame. Grant earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from SFA where he was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi honorary band fraternity and was selected “Outstanding Bandsman” of the Lumberjack Marching Band. Grant taught at Carthage and Center ISDs before joining the leadership of Tatum Music in 1994.

All four SFA concert bands will perform. Opening the concert will be University Band, under the direction of David Campo, associate director of bands, and graduate assistant Teresa Powell. The University Band will perform “Coast Guards March” by Karl King and “Autobahn” by Ryan George.

The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Tamey Anglley, assistant director of bands at SFA, will perform “Cajun Folks Songs” by Texas composer Frank Ticheli. Graduate assistant Brandon Beavers will conduct “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The Wind Symphony, also directed by Campo, will perform three selections, including “Inglesina,” a march by Davide Delle Cese.

The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Fred J. Allen, director of bands, will close the concert and will perform four pieces, including music from the movie “Star Wars” and a march by John Philip Sousa, “The Globe and Eagle.” Guest conductor and honoree Grant will conduct “Procession of the Nobles” by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

KKY and Tau Beta Sigma, honorary band service fraternity and sorority, will sell hamburger plates beginning at 1 p.m. Plates are $5 each and will include a burger, chips and beverage.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Double Bass Quartet will present a master class and will perform at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, in the Music Recital Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The quartet is UTRGV’s most recently formed ensemble, and it is in residence at the university’s Edinburg campus. The ensemble includes undergraduate students Andrés Vela and Daniel Morehead and graduate student Gabriel Preusse, all of whom have collected accolades and awards for their performances at the state, national and international level. Their professor, Dr. George Amorim, leads the ensemble.

Since its formation, the UTRGV Double Bass Quartet has performed in venues throughout the Rio Grande Valley, as well as in New Mexico and El Paso. In September, the quartet had its international debut in Prague, Czech Republic, when it performed as a featured ensemble at the 5th European Double Bass Congress, receiving enthusiastic reviews.

This spring, the UTRGV Double Bass Quartet has appeared throughout the state and abroad, culminating with a performance at the International Society of Bassists Convention in Ithaca, New York, scheduled for June. On the fourth week of April, the quartet will tour Texas. The tour includes the performance at SFA.

The quartet will present Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” a tale of the adventures of a brave little boy. Originally written for orchestra, the piece will be in a skillful adaptation for double bass quartet by Justin Writer, composition professor at UTRGV. The second large work of the program features “Afro Sambas” by the icons of bossa nova, Baden Powell and Vinicius de Moraes. Brazilian bassist Preusse arranged this work. Another piece in the program is “The Mysterious Color of Vampire Sleet at the Moment When Light Becomes Wine” by Austin-based P. Kellach Waddle.

The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Government will host a lecture featuring Bill Whittle at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Dugas Liberal Arts Building, Room 102. Whittle’s lecture is titled “The Implications for Liberty in the Wake of the 2016 Election and President Donald J. Trump.”

Whittle began his career as a freelance television editor and has worked with The Discovery Channel, The History Channel and NBC. He has written for National Review Online and the Daily Wire and is a frequent contributor to Breitbart news.

In addition to serving as video producer for PJ Media, Whittle is co-founder of the film production company Declaration Entertainment, which released its first film, “The Arroyo,” in 2014. He narrates for The Blaze, a multi-media network founded by conservative pundit Glenn Beck. Whittle’s work for PJ Media includes “LunarPalooza,” a three-part series celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing.

“Bill Whittle is a noted conservative pundit and blogger,” said Dr. Donald Gooch, assistant professor in SFA’s Department of Government. “He was instrumental in the early days of the Tea Party and can offer the SFA and Nacogdoches communities his perspective of the 2016 election and the prospects for the near future.”

College Choice, an independent online publication dedicated to helping students find the right college, recently ranked Stephen F. Austin State University eighth among the best 15 schools in the nation for its online bachelor’s degree in special education.

College Choice used several factors to rate the schools, including academic quality, return of investment, academic reputation, tuition, acceptance rates and early-career salaries. Additionally, in order to qualify, institutions were required to hold local accreditation, and SFA’s online program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Dr. Frank Mullins, director of SFA’s special education bachelor’s completion program, credits the program’s faculty members with this accomplishment.

“Our faculty members are dedicated and committed to ensuring continuous program improvement, which is the hallmark of our online programming,” Mullins said. “We produce graduates who are ready from the first day of their careers to teach and improve learning experiences for students with disabilities.”

SFA’s Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in special education and early childhood through 12th grade special education teacher certification allows students to complete a degree online. Through this program, students also engage in extracurricular activities and research related to meeting the needs of students with disabilities. The program maintains a low student-to-teacher ratio, ensuring students receive attention and support from experienced faculty members who are certified to teach online.

As part of SFA’s robust distance-learning program, the bachelor’s degree in special education allows paraprofessionals working in Texas public schools and other qualified individuals who have completed at least 45 hours at community colleges to transfer to SFA and complete their degree online. Paraprofessionals can earn a Texas teaching certificate while remaining in the schools and classrooms where they work. Students in this program also will spend one semester student teaching full time.

“I feel these non-traditional, pre-service teacher candidates have the best of both worlds: full-time jobs in our field where they are supported by their principals and special education directors in tandem with their online coursework with our faculty members here at SFA,” said Dr. Kathleen Sheriff, online program coordinator at SFA. “They graduate with three certifications, which makes them highly qualified.”
