Build a Better World: Summer Reading Kickoff at the Public Library

Community members of any age will find something to do, read, and learn this summer at the library. The Nacogdoches Public Library is thrilled to announce the upcoming summer reading program with the theme of Build a Better World. The 2017 Summer Reading Program is open to everyone, preschoolers to adults, with programs, prize drawings, a reading challenge, and more. The Public Library supports literacy and stresses the importance of keeping up with reading over the summer. The Summer Kickoff Party will be on Saturday, June 3rd at noon, and, in addition to fun and games, attendees can register for events and sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge. This year, patrons may log their reading through an online portal at http://judybmcdonald.readsquared.com, where they can also measure their success and challenge friends, find out about upcoming events, get book recommendations, play games, and more. Minecraft Challenge at the Public Library

Children and teens ages 7 to 17 are invited to participate in a Minecraft Challenge at the Nacogdoches Public Library on the first Saturday of each month this summer. June 3rd is the first challenge, from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. At each session, we’ll present a new challenge, and winners will be featured in their very own Minecraft video on the library’s Youtube channel. Becoming a U.S. Citizen Class at the Public Library

The Nacogdoches Public Library is hosting a program called “Become a U.S. Citizen.” Rosa Ramirez from U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement will provide information about becoming a U.S. citizen. Ramirez will explain the forms, fees, the citizenship exam and interview process. Information and handouts will be provided to participants in English and Spanish. The event is scheduled for June 13th at 6:00 pm. The program is free and no registration is required. For more information about this or other library programs, please call 559-2970.

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful(KNB) has rolled out a new sponsorship program to support litter abatement at the 2017 Texas Blueberry Festival presented by Tipton Ford Lincoln.

Pilgram’s is the event litter care sponsor for Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful litter abatement during the Texas Blueberry Festival while Doches Credit Union has signed on to support the KNB volunteers on the day of the event. Sponsorships are still available, ranging from $100 – $500.

Corporate Volunteer Sponsorships are free, requiring the sponsor to recruit six volunteers for a two-hour shift during the Blueberry Festival. These sponsors receive the chance to win volunteer awards and a custom KNB shirt, prominently featuring each company’s logo on the back, for each of their volunteers to wear during the event.

For over a decade, KNB has partnered with the City of Nacogdoches and The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce to clear litter from the downtown area during the Texas Blueberry Festival. KNB Executive Director Katie Blevins says the new sponsorship program will allow businesses, organizations and individuals to support litter abatement locally.

“The underlying function of our mission is to promote individual responsibility,” Blevins said. “We care about cleaning the litter in our town and we want others to care, too. The new sponsorship program provides a way for people to support litter abatement locally in Nacogdoches.”

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful (KNB), an organization committed to recycling education, litter abatement and beautification in Nacogdoches County, recently released applications for new board membership.

KNB is seeking active leaders who demonstrate an interest in the goals of Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful, including recycling, litter abatement, beautification, and education. Ideal candidates will have past board experience and legal or financial experience. Additional areas of consideration include fundraising, grant writing, public relations, and nonprofit development.

“Board members should expect to commit 4 – 10 hours outside of monthly board meetings,” Katie Blevins, KNB executive director, said. “We have a very active board which leads to a valuable experience for directors.”

The KNB board of directors impacts change in the local community that also benefits the local environment. They provide litter abatement and beautification services that prevent spending by the city of Nacogdoches and offer a popular technology recycling program, estimated to collect over 7,000 lbs. of recyclables this year, that otherwise would not be available to the Nacogdoches community.

The KNB board of directors formed a nominating committee to oversee the selection of new board member candidates for the organization. The search committee is comprised of three current board members, including KNB chairman, Ray Mitchum.
