Microsoft Excel Classes at the Public Library

The Nacogdoches Public Library will offer free Microsoft Excel classes on June 14th and 15th. Part I will be an introduction to the menu, formula writing and formatting. Part II will feature file organization, using multiple sheets and special features. DIY Temporary Tattoos & Creative Lettering at the Public Library

The Nacogdoches Public Library invites teens ages 10 to 17 to learn how to create their own temporary tattoos on Wednesday, June 14th at 4:30 p.m. Participants will practice some cool and fun lettering styles, then apply them as temporary tattoos of their own design. We’ll also learn how to turn dried flowers into wearable art. The event is free, but registration is requested. Please call 559-2970 to reserve a spot.

Detox Your Home & DIY Sunscreen at the Public Library

The Nacogdoches Public Library invites adults to a class on essential oils called Detox Your Home on Thursday, June 15th at 5:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to detoxify the home with essential oils, and then their newfound knowledge to work by making their own sunscreen. Escape the Puzzle Room at the Public Library

The Nacogdoches Public Library invites tweens & teens aged 10 to 17 to Escape the Puzzle Room: Mysterious Fortune on Friday, June 16th at 5:30 p.m. Participants will work as a team to solve the mystery of the unknown stranger who’s left his fortune to the library. Successfully completing a series of puzzles, hidden clues, and riddles will reveal the fictional benefactor’s identity. The event is free, but registration is requested. Nacogdoches Public Library will host a special Spanish-language movie night this Saturday, June 17th at 6:30 pm. The movie is about Tejano music star, Selena Quintanilla-Perez whose brief life touched many fans and whose legacy continues. The event is open to all ages, but attendance is limited. Spice Swap & Around the World Tasting at the Public Library

The Nacogdoches Public Library invites adults to a Spice Swap & Around the World Tasting event on Saturday, June 17th at 2:30 p.m. Does your cupboard have too many containers of cream of tartar, but no salt? Do you have more turmeric than you’ll ever need? Bring your extra spices and swap with other cooks. We’ll also learn some fun spice substitutes and other uses for your not-so-fresh spices. SFA Theater to Visit Public Library

The Nacogdoches Public Library invites people of all ages to a musical production during our Summer Reading Program on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Theater will present musical selections from their upcoming SummerStage Festival production of Ivy + Bean. This musical is based on the Ivy + Bean series of books written by Annie Barrows about a couple of girls with very different personalities who become the best of friends. Pre-Law Academy at SFA introduces high school students to multifaceted law careers

Groups of high school students analyzed a mock crime scene during the Stephen F. Austin State University Pre-Law Academy crime scene investigation simulation led by Dr. Milton Hill, SFA assistant professor in the Department of Government. During this weeklong program, students with an interest in law engaged in hands-on activities to better understand the field.

Scanning the crime scene, dozens of high school students search for clues in a mock case. Displaced clothing and picture frames litter the floor. Could this be the sign of a struggle?

Last week, Stephen F. Austin State University hosted its fourth annual Pre-Law Academy. During this weeklong program hosted by SFA’s Division of Multidisciplinary Programs, high school students with an interest in law engaged in hands-on activities to better understand the field.

During a crime scene investigation simulation with Dr. Milton Hill, SFA assistant professor in the Department of Government, students analyzed a mock crime scene and witnessed firsthand how criminologists, linguists and forensic anthropologists work together.

Dr. Joyce Johnston, director of the Pre-Law Academy and multidisciplinary degrees and French professor at SFA, discussed the program’s many benefits.

“Participants are high school students thinking about what they should study in college. Many ask, ‘What do I need to study to get into law school?’ The answer is liberal arts are extremely valuable to success in law school,” Johnston said. “Liberal arts prepare students to become proficient writers, to be convincing, and to be avid readers and critical thinkers.”

Dr. Donald Gooch, co-director of the Pre-Law Academy and assistant professor of political science in SFA’s Department of Government, explained each year program participants are presented with a different mock case. This year, students worked to solve a mock first-degree murder case in which the state charged fictional character Leslie Andrews with the murder of her husband, Rob. Leslie, however, claimed Rob committed suicide.

Various activities throughout the week were tied to the case. Students worked in groups to present their case at the end of the week during a mock trial in a Nacogdoches courtroom where a judge monitored the competition. The mock trial provided students with an opportunity to role-play the duties of a prosecutor such as calling witnesses and certifying expert witnesses according to court requirements.

Several SFA faculty and staff members in the College of Liberal and Applied Arts contributed to the academy as guest speakers.

“We were fortunate to have many faculty members participate this year. They spoke on the different aspects of how their disciplines intersect and interact with law,” Gooch said. “Students not only are presented the basics of law, but they also see the multifaceted aspects of law interacting with ethics, health, linguistics and more.”

In addition to being introduced to various disciplines, students connected with experts in the field, including those from the Texas State Bar Association and numerous attorneys and judges who presented on various topics such as preparing for law school, a day in the life of an attorney, negotiations and more.

Limited enrollment available in SFA’s STEM Research and Learning Center’s Investigations in Math and Science Academy

A limited number of students can still enroll in a weeklong science, technology, engineering and mathematics camp hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s STEM Research and Learning Center aimed at engaging East Texas students entering the seventh or eighth grade in hands-on STEM activities.

“The goal of the Investigations in Math and Science Academy is to get students excited about STEM disciplines in a way that enthuses them about the many possibilities in math and science,” said Dr. Jana Redfield, assistant director of the SFA STEM Research and Learning Center, which is part of SFA’s College of Sciences and Mathematics. The camp consists of modules that cover chemistry, biology, engineering, mathematics and physics basics.

“Each module is about three hours of hands-on learning, allowing students to not only experience math and science explorations, but to create a spark of interest in a possible future STEM career,” Redfield added.

How do we stop a zombie outbreak in the chemistry lab? What do kidney stones, the planets, nuclear facilities and cannonballs have in common? How can we create something with a 3-D printer that is useful and artistic? The iMAS Academy answers these and similar questions over the course of five days.

In one module, students work in the chemistry lab to solve a zombie crisis using proven chemistry concepts and high-tech instrumentation. In another module, students explore the use of conic sections in the magic cone and discover its useful applications for the world. Students will also investigate Lanana Creek with biology faculty members and create and print objects on 3-D printers with engineering faculty members. The week culminates with a physics show, building “wigglebots” and a swim party at the SFA Student Recreation Center.

“So much goes into the development of the curriculum for iMAS. The iMAS modules are designed to be student centered, hands-on and fun. They are initially written by STEM faculty members and area master teachers,” Redfield said. “Once written, modules are reviewed for accuracy and science/math grade-level appropriateness.”

The 2017 iMAS Academy will be held from 8 a.m. to noon June 19 through 22 and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 23 on the SFA campus, Math Building, Room 101. The cost is $100 per attendee and includes the price of materials, snacks, prizes and a T-shirt. Visit cosm.sfasu.edu/stem/imas-academy to register.
