At approximately 12:08 pm yesterday, the Nacogdoches Police Department received several calls of a man shooting a pistol in the parking lot of Nacogdoches Medical Center Hospital at 4920 NE Stallings Drive.
Officers responded according to protocol for an active shooter incident. While officers were enroute, callers advised that the man was still in the parking lot with the handgun. Callers stated that the man had fired the handgun twice and was shouting.
The first responding officers arrived on the scene four minutes later. A perimeter was established around the hospital. The hospital enacted their emergency plan and a nearby daycare was told to shelter in place. Northeast Stallings Drive in front of the hospital was closed to traffic, as well as the Stallings Drive exit/entrance to the Wal Mart parking lot.
After a search of the parking lot, the suspect was located on the west side of the hospital. It was determined that the man had discharged a BB pistol that looked like an automatic pistol in the parking lot. Control and all clear was called at 12:25 pm.
The investigation revealed that the suspect was a Medical Center Hospital on medical business and had his dog with him. According to the suspect, the dog was not on a leash and the dog responds to the firing of the BB pistol. He was also shouting at the dog.
The suspect has been identified as Jeffery Warren Whigham, 65 of Milam, Texas. He was taken into custody without incident. He is charged with Deadly Conduct, a misdemeanor.
In addition to Nacogdoches Police officers, members of several other law enforcement agencies, including constables, highway patrol and sheriff’s department responded. Off-duty officers who were in the area also responded to assist.
Edith McDaniel, 89, of Nacogdoches died July 13, 2017, in Shreveport, La. She was born Feb. 1, 1928. Arrangements are pending with Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, Nacogdoches.
Kenneth Ray Fincher, 73, of Nacogdoches died Thursday, July 13, 2017, at a Nacogdoches nursing home. He was born Oct. 26, 1944. Arrangements are pending with Cason Monk-Metcalf in Nacogdoches.

The Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music is accepting scholarship applications for its fall classes.
The music program features the study of a variety of musical instruments and choral techniques. Upper-level musicians as well as SFA faculty and students teach classes.
Partial scholarships are awarded to music students based on need, according to Pat Barnett, Music Prep director. Application forms and information about the various programs offered are available on the Music Prep website at www.music.sfasu.edu/prep. Deadline to apply for scholarships is Aug. 1.
A Music Prep open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at 3028 Raguet St.
“New and returning students and their parents are invited to attend the open house at the Prep House to speak with faculty and to register for private and group lessons,” Barnett said. “Piney Woods Youth Orchestra auditions are on the same day of the open house, and auditions begin at 10 a.m.”
Students may enroll for 16 private lessons or 12 private lessons for the semester. In addition to the Piney Woods Youth Orchestra, Music Prep offers an Adult Piano Class, Music Theory Adventures for beginning and intermediate students, the Choristers youth choral ensemble, and the Raguet Strings adult ensemble. Harp ensemble classes are offered for students in third through sixth grades, middle and high school ages and adults.
Music Prep offers private music lessons in piano, harp, violin, Suzuki violin, flute, cello, trumpet, trombone, voice, percussion and more.
Private lessons begin the week of Aug. 21 for 16-week upper level faculty instruction and the week of Sept. 11 for 12-week SFA music major instruction.
