NPD CONDUCTS PROSTITUTION OPERATION

Nacogdoches Police officers conducted a prostitution and human trafficking operation on South Street late Saturday night and made several arrests for various vice related crimes. Officers with the Street Crimes Unit, Criminal Investigation Division and Patrol Division conducted an undercover operation that netted 10 arrests for prostitution, promoting prostitution and other various narcotics related offenses and outstanding warrants. The Nacogdoches Police Department takes these offenses against persons very seriously. The investigation is ongoing and other arrests are still possible.

Dekearian Maddox, 23, of Tyler, Promotion of Prostitution

Tribecka Elizabeth Oneal, 23, of Tyler, Prostitution, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Probation Violation warrant

Eunice Darvane Aaron, 22, of Tyler, Prostitution, Possession of a Controlled Substance

Jaime Anderson, RM Blake Join Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful Board of Directors

New board member RM Blake, KNB Chairman Ray Mitchum, and new board member Jaime Anderson.

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful (KNB), an organization committed to recycling education, litter abatement and beautification in Nacogdoches County, recently appointed Jaime Anderson and RM Blake to the Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful Board of Directors.

Anderson is the co-owner and Vice President of Nacogdoches Architectural Restorations, LLC. She also operates property management, leasing and bookkeeping for Anderson Properties and Annacco, Inc., manages company owned commercial and residential properties, and assists in development projects. Anderson is currently the President of the Nacogdoches Junior Forum and a Heritage Festival Herald. Anderson was born and raised in Houston. She moved to Nacogdoches in 1996 to study Art at SFA, fell in love with the town, and never looked back. She considers herself a local after living in Nacogdoches for 21 years. “I’m very excited about this opportunity to help protect the beauty of the town I love so much,” Anderson said of her appointment to the board of directors.

Blake is a producer and manager at Roy Blake Insurance Agency specializing in insurance sales and IT maintenance, and assists other agency producers. When asked about his job responsibilities, he has been known to say, “Whatever it takes.” Blake was born and raised in Nacogdoches. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Stephen F. Austin State University. He started his insurance practice in Austin, TX before moving back to Nacogdoches. Blake is the Vice President of the W5NAC Nacogdoches Amateur Radio Club and the Secretary of the DETARC Lufkin Amateur Radio Club, both of which service several events each year. “I want Nacogdoches to continue to be a beautiful place to live and I am willing to do ‘whatever it takes’ to help make that happen,” Blake said of his appointment to the board of directors.

Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful is still accepting applications for board membership as three seats on the board will become available in January 2018. KNB seeks active leaders who demonstrate an interest in the goals of Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful, including recycling, litter abatement, beautification, and education. Ideal candidates will have past board experience and legal or financial experience. Additional areas of consideration include fundraising, grant writing, public relations, and nonprofit development.

“Board members should expect to commit 4 – 10 hours outside of monthly board meetings,” Katie Blevins, KNB executive director, said. “We have a very active board which leads to a valuable experience for directors.”

The KNB board of directors impacts change in the local community that also benefits the local environment. They provide litter abatement and beautification services that prevent spending by the city of Nacogdoches and offer a popular technology recycling program, estimated to collect over 7,000 lbs. of recyclables this year, that otherwise would not be available to the Nacogdoches community.

New partnership allows SFA to offer interior design degree in Houston

Stephen F. Austin State University and Houston Community College are partnering to offer a bachelor’s degree in interior design at the HCC central campus. Houston-area students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in interior design have a more convenient option as a result of a new partnership between Houston Community College and Stephen F. Austin State University. The institutions have launched a program that will allow students to earn their SFA degree on the Houston Community College Central Campus.

Students who have graduated from HCC in interior design and have completed the core course requirements may enroll in the last 42 hours of SFA interior design courses either online or face-to-face on the HCC campus to earn their bachelor’s degree. Dr. Steve Bullard, SFA provost and vice president of academic affairs, said the partnership aligns with the university’s strategic plan, “SFA Envisioned.”

“Our mission is to reach out and meet students where they are,” Bullard said. “We are unified in our belief that we should always put student success first. It’s not about the university; it’s about the student.”

During a ceremony on the HCC campus commemorating the agreement, Dr. Muddassir Siddiqi, president of HCC Central College, said the partnership is a collaboration between two great academic facilities with strong academic offerings in interior design.

“We are embarking on a new journey — one that is characterized by collaboration, innovation and a commitment to positive student outcomes,” Siddiqi said. “This partnership is one of the strategies we need in order to meet workforce demands in the region, address affordability and increase access to educational opportunities.”

The senior capstone course for interior design majors will be a virtual course joining students on HCC’s campus with students on the SFA campus to work together on a team project.

“Firms that have multiple locations work together every day, and we want our students to have this experience,” said Sally Ann Swearingen, SFA associate professor of interior design. “Houston is a leader in interior design and architectural firms, and this partnership will allow students a way of mixing with the firms through the American Society of Interior Designers and International Interior Design Association professional organizations.”

Students who graduate with a bachelor’s degree in interior design at an accredited university, such as SFA, are allowed to take the first portion of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification exam, which is the industry’s professional certification. After six months of experience, students are qualified to take the final portion of the exam.
