Día de los Muertos Fiesta in Downtown Nacogdoches

The 5th Annual Día de los Muertos Fiesta will be held in Downtown Nacogdoches on Saturday, November 4th from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Nacogdoches Public Library is partnering with the SFA Art Galleries and Cole Art Center to present this year’s event which will be held on the downtown square around the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Organizers are inviting businesses, organizations, and other groups to register to participate, and forms will be available at the Nacogdoches Public Library at 1112 North Street and at the Cole Art Center at 329 East Main Street. “This event has become a local treasure thanks to the passion and hard work of John Handley and Alisa Steed at the Cole Art Center, and we’re so pleased with this year’s new location on the square,” says Crystal Hicks, assistant library director. “We welcome a variety of vendors and activity stations, and there will be plenty of entertainment, including a costume contest.” Proceeds from the event will benefit the Friends of the Nacogdoches Public Library. The City of Nacogdoches Main Street Program is excited to announce tickets are on sale now for Second Story Tours, set for Saturday, October 22, 2017, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in historic downtown Nacogdoches.

This year’s Second Story Tours will feature seven downtown lofts and homes lined up for ticket holders to tour in addition to refreshments and light appetizers will be served at select tour locations.

“This is a great opportunity to spend the day downtown shopping and touring properties, that the general public rarely get to see,” Amy Mehaffey, Communications/Main Street Director said. “We chose to hold this event on a Sunday afternoon to encourage visitors to shop at our downtown shops. Our merchants have recently expanded their hours to accommodate shoppers who visit on Sundays.”

The theme for this year’s event comes from Stephen F. Austin State University and their homecoming events. The Second Story Tours will be held during homecoming weekend, and visitors will have a chance to purchase tickets at Alumni Corner during the Homecoming football game.

Parents visiting for homecoming and the Parent’s Day events are encouraged to participate in the tours to see a new side of Downtown Nacogdoches. Tickets are $25 and are available now at the Visitor’s Center, the Fredonia Hotel, and online here! You can also find the link for online tickets on the Nacogdoches Main Street Facebook Page. Proceeds from this event will go to the beautification of historic downtown Nacogdoches.

Take a sneak peek behind the scenes of a western classic with the City of Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department at the True Grit Exhibit opening. During the month of October set sketches by Gregory Hill, who worked as an illustrator on the 2010 Coen Brothers True Grit movie, will be displayed at the Nacogdoches Railroad Depot – 101 Old Tyler Road. Visitors will be able to see early sketches of the Monarch Boarding house, Stone Hills and the streets of Fort Smith, Arkansas as well as get a little insight to the movie making process with quotes from Mr. Hill.

The exhibit’s grand opening on October 5th at 7:00pm will be one of the first of the One Book, One City festivities that are to take place throughout the month. Be sure to get a copy of Charles Portis’ True Grit for yourself from the Nacogdoches Public Library so you’re well versed in this Western classic before our month long event series kicks off in October. In addition to the exclusive look into the creative process for the movie, light refreshments of beans and corn dodgers will be served. Admission to this event is free and appropriate for all ages. The Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department will be hosting their annual Pioneer Day at the Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens, 304 North Street on Saturday, October 7th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This event will give visitors the opportunity to experience history in an interactive way with pioneer crafts and other hands-on activities. This year’s Pioneer Day will have a Wild West theme to go along with the Nacogdoches Public Library’s One Book, One City program. This year’s book is True Grit by Charles Portis and follows the ornery Rooster Cogburn and the tenacious Mattie Ross on their journey to bring the murderous Tom Chaney to justice.

The activities taking place at Pioneer Day are ones people would perform either as a hobby or as a chore in the 1800s. Tasks such as blacksmithing, spinning, and butter making were essential duties in farm life, flower pounding was a great way to add a little color and design to your blankets or quilts, and making rag dolls brought delight to the children of the time.
Parts of this event will be held outside and can be messy, so be sure to dress appropriately.
