Old-Fashioned Sweet Tooth Sugarcane Festival Cancelled

CONTACT: Jessica Sowell
936-560-4441

The City of Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department typically hosts an annual Old-Fashioned Sweet Tooth Sugarcane Event on the second Saturday in January at the Durst-Taylor Historic House & Gardens. The 2018 event, unfortunately, will not take place.

This event, a favorite for many, is completely dependent on the sugarcane crop grown throughout the year at the Durst-Taylor Historic House & Gardens. Just like in the 1840’s, crops sometimes fail, the weather doesn’t cooperate and plans have to change. The cane that was planted in early 2017 unfortunately did not yield a crop. We plan on taking this unfortunate set back as an opportunity to replant our crop and reimagine the Sugarcane event; possibly adding new partners, events and activities.

The Durst-Taylor Historic House & Gardens is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guided tours of the property are always free of charge. We hope that everyone will come to the Old-Fashioned Sweet Tooth Sugarcane Event in 2019!

For additional information, please contact Jessica Sowell at 936-560-4441 or email historicsites@ci.nacogdoches.tx.us. Information can also be found on the Historic Sites website, http://www.ci.nacogdoches.tx.us, or on the Facebook page, Nac Historic Sites.

SFA Gardens to host grafting workshop

Jordan Cunningham, a greenhouse technician at SFA, grafts a bald cypress in preparation for the Jan. 27 budding and grafting seminar at SFA Gardens.

Jordan Cunningham, a greenhouse technician at SFA, grafts a bald cypress in preparation for the Jan. 27 budding and grafting seminar at SFA Gardens.

Make plans to join Dr. David Creech, SFA professor emeritus of agriculture, as he discusses the plant propagation techniques of budding and grafting from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Brundrett Conservation Education Building located at 2900 Raguet St.

“Budding and grafting is an ancient practice that is part science, part art and always fun,” Creech said. “We bud and graft when cuttings won’t root or they root and grow off too slowly. We also bud and graft to take advantage of a superior rootstock — one that dwarfs the top or provides disease or insect resistance, or allows a plant to grow in a soil that is generally not suitable.”

Participants will practice on a variety of plants and will take home their own grafted Japanese maple tree. Attendees should bring a small, sharp pocketknife. All additional materials will be provided.

The cost is $25 for SFA Gardens’ members and $30 for nonmembers. Space is limited. Register by calling (936) 468-1832, or email sfagardens@sfasu.edu.

small_fredoniaonlyposterThe City of Nacogdoches Main Street program is excited to announce that tickets for the sixth annual Wine Swirl are on sale now! Join us “On Cloud Wine” as you stroll down the red brick streets, tasting some of the best wine selections that Texas has to offer! The ticketed wine and food pairing event will showcase Texas wineries and local and regional food trucks along the historic brick streets. Proceeds will be used to enhance the beautification and promotion efforts of historic downtown Nacogdoches.

For the 2018 Wine Swirl event, wineries will be stationed outside of Downtown shops in booths — like a Wine festival! You will be able to purchase glasses and bottles and sip while you shop. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy wine samples from Texas wineries – but you are encouraged to purchase a glass of something you love. “This is our biggest Wine Swirl event so far,” stated Main Street Director, Amy Mehaffey, “This year we are encouraging our guests to find a wine that they love and buy a glass to take with them as they shop, dine, and dance on our brick streets! We will have wine passports showcasing information about each winery, so you will know where to find your favorites long after the event.”

Be sure to check out the amazing local entertainment, including the Nac Pac Jazz Trio and Madame Le Cerceau, as you explore the unique shops and boutiques of Nacogdoches. Food will be available for purchase from several local and regional food trucks, including The Red Tulip, Eat a Bite, Merci’s World Cuisine, Say Cheese, and Brendyn’s BBQ.

Don’t let the day end once Wine Swirl is over! The Fredonia Hotel extends your experience of floating “On Cloud Wine” by providing a luxurious room and a bottle of wine with an exclusive Fredonia key opener as a souvenir! Whether in-town or out-of-town, we hope you will join us at our host hotel for the entire weekend.

This year, our Swirl packet pick up will be located in the soon-to-open Red House Winery at 108 E. Pilar Street, located next to Watts Law Office and behind Johnson’s Furniture. Your packet will include your event map, wine bag, glass, and new wine passport! Parking is available at City Hall, on the square, or at Red House Winery. You may also pick up your packet early on Friday, February 9 from 4:00- 6:00 PM or the day of the event from 3 – 6 pm. Remember, Main Street will be closed on the day of the event so plan accordingly.

You may contact Amy Mehaffey at 936-559-2573 if you have any questions.

Alumni Association names Mr. and Miss SFA

Stephanie Gray and Lawrence ‘Mac’ Moore have been selected as recipients of the 2018 Mr. and Miss SFA Award.

Stephanie Gray and Lawrence ‘Mac’ Moore have been selected as recipients of the 2018 Mr. and Miss SFA Award.

The Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association announced Lawrence ‘Mac’ Moore of Heath and Stephanie Gray of Waxahachie have been selected as recipients of the 2018 Mr. and Miss SFA Award.

The Mr. SFA Award was established in honor of the late Stan McKewen, a 1934 SFA graduate. The Arnodean Covin Miss SFA Award honors the late alumna who was named Miss SFA in 1940, 1941 and 1942.

A 2013 graduate of Rockwall-Heath High School, Moore, who received the Stan McKewen Mr. SFA Award, is a senior finance major and the son of Larry and Rachel Moore.

“Lawrence has truly shown that he cares for others more than himself through his participation in organizations and community events,” said Saville Harris, coordinator of student engagement at SFA. “He makes you want to be a better you with his positive outlook and willingness to help others.”

Moore serves as a member of the Mast Student Investment Roundtable, president of the SFA Inline Hockey Club and president of the fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon.

Additionally, Moore has volunteered with The Big Event and assists with his fraternity’s community activities, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital fundraisers and visiting patients in Nacogdoches nursing homes.

“I’ve learned the great value of friendship and brotherhood, what it means to have pride in your school and how to find value in even the smallest things,” Moore said.

Gray, recipient of the Arnodean Covin Miss SFA Award, is a 2013 graduate of Avalon High School. She is a senior hospitality major and the daughter of Steven Davis and Stacy Wilson.

“I strive for excellence in every aspect of my life at SFA and apply the SFA Way to all involvement in my life,” Gray said.

Gray is active in many community and SFA activities, including volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club, the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau, SFA Big Jacks, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society and the Volleyball Club.

“I am impressed with Stephanie because of her active involvement in our fundraising project as the chair of the logistics committee,” said Dr. Gina Fe Causin, assistant professor of hospitality administration. “Her involvement demonstrated her dynamic personality, leadership, communication and organizational skills. All these characteristics will help her become a role model for the hospitality management students and within the industry.”

SFA’s Alumni Association awards the Mr. and Miss SFA titles annually to exemplary students who will represent and promote the university. Recipients are selected based on their scholarship, participation and leadership in academic and co-curricular activities, and citizenship, service and loyalty to the university. A committee of faculty and staff members, community leaders and alumni makes the selections.

The recipients will be honored Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at Johnson Coliseum during halftime of the Lumberjack basketball game, which begins at 6 p.m.
