SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs to host second annual Women’s Empowerment Summit

Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will host its second annual Women’s Empowerment Summit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

The summit will focus on empowering women from various backgrounds and include sessions where speakers will discuss empowerment in areas such as professional development, education, etiquette, health, body image and more.

The summit will feature two speakers: Jessica Soukup, a writer, feminist and activist for equal rights for transgender and gender-diverse people, and Miara Shaw, a professional development and life strategist.

“It is important in this day and age for women to uplift each other,” said Veronica Beavers, OMA director. “There are so many powerful voices around SFA’s campus and community, and we need to offer this outlet to hear them.”

This free event is open to the SFA and Nacogdoches communities. No tickets are needed, but interested participants must preregister online at sfasu.edu/oma by Feb. 28. Food will be provided.

SFA’s School of Human Sciences launches online bachelor’s degree program

Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences has launched a new degree program that allows students to earn a four-year degree completely online.

The program, which became available to SFA students in fall 2017, offers an entirely online Bachelor of Science in human sciences with an emphasis in human development and family studies. All core and elective courses are available online.

Dr. Rachel Jumper, assistant professor in SFA’s School of Human Sciences, said the online delivery allows students to earn a bachelor’s degree from a four-year university while working full time and living anywhere.

“We are meeting students ‘where they are’ rather than requiring them to come to us. They have access to the same faculty members, courses and university resources while not having to uproot their lives,” Jumper said. “While the human development and family studies degree has been an online completer program for several years, going fully online allows even more students to become Lumberjacks immediately rather than having to transfer from another school.”

Drs. Lynda Martin, director of the School of Human Sciences, and Hyunsook Kang, assistant professor, agree the online delivery method benefits both the students and university.

“We want to attract more students from diverse populations, which may enhance our quality of education,” Kang said. “An online program’s flexibility and convenience may increase our enrollment.”

With this degree, students learn to become “caretakers for our society,” Jumper said. Students learn to understand the growth, change and development of children, adults and the family while integrating a lifespan, multi-contextual and family systems approach.

Upon graduation, students have a variety of career options, including becoming early intervention specialists, lobbyists, directors of child care and senior citizen facilities, Head Start teachers, parent educators, camp directors and more.

“We are passionate about educating individuals regarding families and lifespan development,” Martin said. “By making this information available online, our reach is much greater, and the theory and research can be shared with more individuals.”

The Association for Business Communication-Southwestern U.S. has posthumously awarded Judi Biss, former Stephen F. Austin State University lecturer in the Rusche College of Business, the 2018 Outstanding Business Educator Award.

Biss began teaching at SFA in 1999 and continued serving for almost 20 years. She taught various business communication courses and was an advocate for undergraduate and graduate research.

Biss passed away in June 2017, and her husband Luis will accept the award on her behalf at the March 2018 Federation of Business Disciplines Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Dr. Marsha Bayless, professor and chair of the Department of Business Communication and Legal Studies, praised Biss for her dedication to SFA students and her service to the university.

“Judi is an excellent recipient for this award because her first priority was her students. She made them feel welcome in class, took personal interest in their accomplishments and kept in touch when they moved on to other courses,” Bayless said. “She also was an excellent advisor and worked to make students successful in their progress at SFA.”
