The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Sciences and Mathematics will host the STEM Business and Industry Speaker Series from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the Math Building, Lecture Hall 101.
The event aims to connect students to STEM professionals, enabling them to learn from leaders in their field as well as other successful STEM students.
James Dickerson, retired senior managing counsel with Dow Chemical Company and former SFA regent, will speak about the emerging opportunities in STEM fields.
“Using my life’s path as an example, I would like to help students envision STEM career options that they may not have considered,” Dickerson said. “Beyond research and teaching, there are an exceptionally broad variety of careers that can allow them to help improve the world and provide a nice living for them and their families.”
SFA biochemistry senior Carmel Tovar will discuss her decision to attend the university and her passion for science.
“I hope my presentation is informative and inspirational to my fellow students who are pursuing a career in STEM,” Tovar said.
The event is free and open to all majors.
“The STEM Business and Industry Speaker Series provides a unique opportunity for students to interact with a highly talented, successful STEM professional and a dedicated, ambitious STEM major,” said Dr. Kimberly M. Childs, dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics. “This interactive professional dialogue creates a platform for discussion between SFA students and the STEM workforce as students prepare for their future in an evolving high-tech society.”

Dr. Rajat Mishra, assistant professor in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business, has been named editor-in-chief of the Modern Project Management Journal by Modern Business Press, an online network of business, technology, computing and education journals.
The Modern Project Management Journal features the latest research on various areas of project management from scholars and practitioners around the world. Mishra explained the journal will “target papers from academicians and practitioners aimed toward bridging the gap between theory of project management and its implementation in the real world.”
Mishra has been teaching at SFA since 2014, and his research interests include strategic management, operations strategy research using panel data analysis, econometric models, corporate social responsibility and more.
Additionally, Mishra serves on the editorial board and is a reviewer for the International Journal of Business Management and Business Quest. He is a reviewer for the International Journal of Quality and Reliability Management and is on the editorial board for the International Journal of Modern Management Sciences.
“I believe research should inform teaching at multiple levels. Therefore, my association with these journals as editor, reviewer and editorial board member helps me inform my students about the current state of art and literature in the field,” Mishra said. “It also helps motivate students to research and ultimately pursue studies beyond their current level.”

Stephen F. Austin State University graduate students and faculty from the Department of Geology visited Magnet Cove before presenting at the 2018 South-Central section meeting of the Geological Society of America in Little Rock, Arkansas. From left: Lillian O’Shay, graduate student from Cushing; Dr. Kevin Stafford, associate professor; Joseph Watkins, graduate student from Nacogdoches; Corbin Cannon, geologist with the Arkansas Geological Survey; Colby Reece, graduate student from Killeen; and Annie Robison, graduate student from Livingston.
Twelve students and four faculty members presented research on field areas spanning Texas and Arkansas.
Graduate students Lillian O’Shay of Cushing and Joseph Watkins of Nacogdoches gave talks on the characterization of gypsic soil in West Texas and on mercury transport in the Big Cypress Bayou and Caddo Lake watersheds.
Graduate students also presented their research in poster sessions, including Heather Dailey of Houston; Kaleb Henry of Waxahachie; Jacob Meinerts of Springtown; Martin Messmer of Savanna, Illinois; Danielle Minteer of Spring; Colby Reece of Killeen; Jessica Shields of Richwood; Bernard Smith of Normangee; Richard Urwin of Montgomery; and Austin Wilkerson of Granbury. The department swept the poster session on karst development and hydrogeology with faculty and students from the department presenting eight of the nine posters.
Dr. Mindy Faulkner, assistant professor; Dr. LaRell Nielson, professor; Dr. Kevin Stafford, associate professor; and Dr. Liane Stevens, assistant professor, presented the results of their research.
Students and faculty also participated in field trips to Magnet Cove led by staff from the Arkansas Geological Survey in conjunction with the meeting.
“Participating in scientific meetings is part of the training our graduate students receive in effective scientific communication,” Stevens said. “Preparing a research presentation is a great way to crystallize the details and significance of your work in your own mind, and giving and receiving feedback from other geoscientists is a critical part of the scientific process. Meetings are also a fun way to meet new colleagues, learn about cutting-edge research and enjoy our science.”
