“I estimated that our volunteers would collect 900 lbs. of recycled electronics at this event,” Katie Blevins, KNB executive coordinator, said. “2,350 lbs. – that’s a great surprise.”
Techcycle Saturday is a free technology recycling event, offered quarterly during 2017. Two more events will be conducted this year, from 9 a.m. to noon on June 24 and Sept. 23 at 220 W. Hospital Street.
The recycling collection rate for the KNB Techcycle Saturday collection program has more than doubled in 2017. In 2016, KNB held 4 monthly collections at the end of the year, from September through December. Volunteers collected an average of 300 lbs. of recycled electronics at each monthly collection event, totaling 1,192 lbs.
Attendance at the events increased as well, with 73 people participating in this month’s quarterly program while the monthly events in 2016 averaged 30 participants per event.
WIth just five volunteers collecting recyclables at the event on Saturday, everyone worked diligently to accommodate the day’s unexpected traffic. Blevins says KNB will need more volunteers at the next event on June 24.
“Techcycle Saturday is a great volunteer and sponsorship option for groups and businesses,” Blevins said. “It’s an opportunity to get you name, and faces, in front of a large number of people while preforming a service that benefits the environment and effects the sustainability of our community.”
