Tips for hiring SFA student leaders explained at chamber meeting

The Nacogdoches County Chamber Fourth Friday Luncheon is noon to 1 p.m., Friday, April 22 at Austin Hall, 4603 North St. with guest speaker Dr. Adam Peck, Assistant Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs, SFASU.

Peck will share a simple trick for hiring the best: hire student leaders. Attendees will learn how SFA can assist employers in connecting with the very best students.

“Today’s employers demand students with not only the technical expertise to excel in their first jobs, but with the interpersonal qualities that can be so hard to teach. These are often referred to as ‘soft skills’” Peck said. “They include such qualities as the ability to communicate, function as a member of a team and solve problems independently. Research conducted at SFA shows that student leaders tend to develop these skills more fully than their peers who are not involved.”

Peck has served as Assistant Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs at Stephen F. Austin State University since 2008 and has been a student affairs practitioner for more than 20 years. He currently serves as President for the Texas Association of College Personnel Administrators (TACUSPA) and as State Director for Texas of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). He has previously served as Chair of the Texas Deans of Students Association. His book, “Project CEO: Demonstrating the Impact of Co-curricular Experiences on the Skills Employers Demand” is being published by NASPA Press and will come out in early 2017. He is the author of more than twenty scholarly articles, five book chapters and has presented more than seventy-five national and international webinars.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater from Lewis University, a Master of Arts in Speech Communication from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration from The University of Texas at Austin.

Attendee RSVPs are required by noon, Wednesday, April 20, and lunch is $16. Find the secure “pay online” option in Hot News at nacogdoches.org or all (936) 560-5533.
