On Saturday, April 16, 2016, the City of Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department will host its first Azalea Art Day. We are excited to host this event that not only celebrates the Nacogdoches Azalea Trail, but also celebrates the history of the Sterne-Hoya House Museum & Library. Adolphus Sterne was a business-minded man, but he was also a proficient gardener and imported exotic plants and flowers to plant on his property. His home was known for its beautiful rose garden and peach orchard; today we have large, beautiful Azaleas and several other wonderful flower varieties.
Visitors will be able to take part in a variety of art projects, some with historic roots, and take their creations home with them. We will have flower pounding, which was practiced by early settlers to transfer color from flowers on to fabric for use in quilts or clothing. There will also be bubble painting, painting with flower “paint brushes,” homemade sun catchers and a large community art project for everyone to take part in.
This event will take place at the Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library from 10 am to 2 pm. The event and all the activities are free to the public. The activities will be outside and may be messy, so visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately.
