Dr. J.D. Salas, assistant professor of tuba and euphonium at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present a lecture recital on Banda Sinaloense at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
Salas will discuss the origins and advent of the unique musical form that has risen to a pop-level status in the Hispanic community within the past decade. The style, which combines European village band and Mexican folk music, originated in Sinaloa, Mexico, in the 1850s, when the main bass instrument of the ensemble — the tuba — was invented, explained Salas.
The lecture is based on research Salas conducted for his dissertation and his series of three articles recently published in the International Tuba-Euphonium Association Journal. It will be interspersed with examples of the music performed by Salas and a student ensemble.
The lecture recital, which is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music, is a part of the Cole Performing Arts Series. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Drive.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 or seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please go to www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.
