POLICE ISSUE HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

During the holiday season, people are often busy, excited, and sometimes a bit careless. The Nacogdoches Police Department issues the following suggestions to help keep your holiday season safe and happy.

At Home:

• Be sure and lock all windows and doors when you leave your house or apartment.
• Don’t display holiday gifts where they can be seen from a window or doorway. Store gifts before going away on holiday trips.
• If you go out for the evening, turn on a light or radio so your home appears to be occupied.
• If you take a holiday trip, have some interior lights activated by an automatic timer. Have a neighbor or friend check on your home, keep the yard, and pick-up mail and newspaper deliveries.
• Be wary of strangers soliciting for charitable donations. They may attempt to take advantage of people’s generosity during the holidays. Ask for identification, how donated funds are used, if contributions are tax deductible, etc.
• Immediately after the holidays, mark new gifts with your driver license number and record new serial numbers.
• Test your smoke detectors.

• Use only fire-resistant ornaments on your tree and make sure that electric lights are functioning properly. Don’t leave the lights on overnight or when you are away from home.
• Avoid leaving boxes from purchases (TV, VCR, computer, etc) out on the curb for trash pickup. Break these boxes down, and place inside a trash bag.

While Shopping:

• Shop before dark if possible. Coordinate shopping trips with a friend. Never park in an unlit lot or area, no matter how convenient it is.
• Lock your packages and gifts in your vehicle’s trunk. Keep your vehicle’s doors locked and windows closed.
• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a check, credit card, or debit card when possible.
• To discourage purse-snatchers, don’t overburden yourself with packages. Have your car keys out and ready before leaving the store.
• Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse under your arm. Keep your wallet in an inside jacket pocket, not in a rear trouser pocket.
• Teach children to go to a store clerk or security guard and ask for help if you become separated. They should never go into a parking lot alone.

Holiday Party Safety:

• Have non-alcoholic beverages available for party guests.
• Serve something to eat before serving alcoholic beverages. High protein foods stay in the stomach longer and slow the absorption of alcohol into the system.
• Have alternative transportation for intoxicated persons. Never allow guests to drink and drive.

The NPD asks that persons report any suspicious activity immediately by calling 559-2607.

U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to visit SFA

U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison will visit Stephen F. Austin State University later this month for two special on-campus events. She will attend the grand opening and reception for the Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison Room Dec. 14 and offer the commencement address at fall graduation ceremonies Dec. 15.

Hutchison has served as senator since 1993, and she remains the only woman to represent the state of Texas in the U.S. Senate. Her current term expires in January, and she did not seek re-election.

Recently, Hutchison announced her decision to donate to SFA some of the artifacts representing her time in the Senate. The artifacts, which include service awards, photographs taken with world leaders and other items of historical interest, will be displayed in the Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison Room located on the second floor of the Ralph W. Steen Library. The public is invited to attend the grand opening and reception at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14.

“We are extremely pleased to have been given the opportunity to help preserve Senator Hutchison’s proud legacy of service to our university, our community, our state and our nation by caring for and displaying her historical artifacts in Steen Library,” said SFA President Dr. Baker Pattillo.

“During Senator Hutchison’s tenure in the Senate, SFA has received federal funding to support important ongoing research in many areas, including education, forestry and agriculture,” he said. “She has been one of SFA’s strongest proponents in Washington, and the university is eternally grateful for her strong support and friendship throughout the years.”

The room’s design and furnishings will replicate as closely as possible the office Hutchison occupied in Washington, D.C. Display cases will hold many of the donated artifacts, which include a Houston Oilers football jersey bearing Hutchison’s name, a large-scale model of Space Shuttle Discovery, keys to many Texas cities and an 1853 Mitchell’s Universal Atlas once owned by Texas hero Thomas J. Rusk.

Rusk was the first Texan to hold the U.S. Senate seat Hutchison currently occupies. He and Hutchison’s great-great-grandfather, Charles S. Taylor, were friends, and both signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Hutchison has served in the Senate leadership. She was first elected vice chairman of the Republican Conference and later elected chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, becoming the fourth-highest ranking Republican senator.

She currently is the ranking member on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and the Appropriations Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice and Science. She has been chairman of the Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee and serves on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

Hutchison is a member of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly National Advisory Committee. In 2012, she was unanimously elected chairman of the Board of Visitors at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. She previously served as chairman of the board from 1998 to 2000 and from 2008 to 2009 before being re-elected to serve again this year.

Hutchison grew up in La Marque and graduated from the University of Texas and UT Law School. She was twice elected to the Texas House of Representatives and, in 1990, was elected Texas state treasurer. In June 2000, she and several colleagues co-authored “Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senate,” and in 2004, she released her first book, “American Heroines: The Spirited Women Who Shaped Our Country.” Hutchison published her most recent bestseller, “Leading Ladies: American Trailblazers,” in October 2007.

Hutchison lives in Dallas with her husband, Ray, and their two children, Bailey and Houston.

SFA fall commencement ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at William R. Johnson Coliseum. More than 980 degrees will be awarded, including 825 bachelor’s degrees, 157 master’s degrees and one doctoral degree. More than 180 students will graduate with honors, including 75 cum laude, 48 magna cum laude and 5 summa cum laude.

The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in Room 110 of the Agriculture Building located at 1924 Wilson Drive.

Dr. David Creech, professor emeritus in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, will present “Why Daniel Burnham was right when he said, ‘Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood.’”

Creech has been on the SFA faculty since 1978 and is director and founder of the SFA Mast Arboretum, Ruby Mize Azalea Garden and Gayla Mize Garden. He is co-director of the Pineywoods Native Plant Center and was named SFA Regents Professor for the 2006-07 academic year.

He and his wife Janet are both active gardeners and love to travel.

The Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series is normally held the third Thursday of each month at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA Mast Arboretum. However, due to the Christmas break, the lecture is being held the second Thursday in December. A rare plant raffle will be held after the program.
